Once the vows are said, the rings on, and the guests gone home, what to do with your time together on the British Virgin Islands. We went in the summer, and highly recommend it: the island is nearly empty of tourists, meaning it's just the two of you. The most we ever had on a beach with us was about 15 (for two miles of beach!), and "rainy season" for us meant a rain cloud once every two hours, and a refreshing cooling off

A great base. With on-site pool (with swim-up bar), beach (not great for swimming, but superb for chilling out, drinking champagne and rum), car rentals, snorkel gear and dive shop, restaurants, and tour-office, you can just stay here all the time if you want. No more awkward relatives' demands to deal with, planning, etc. Food is tasty at the restaurants, staff are friendly. Treat yourself to the beachfront cabanas (hillside rooms have great views, but beachfront gets you a deck, hammock-for-2, and puts you right on the beach). This isn't a palace, so don't expect one -- if that's what you want, go to Europe. But it's so very relaxing |

Time your dinner visit there just right, and this could be the romantic highlight -- the view is fantastic, and the wonderful Scottish proprietor will encourage you to go up to the roof between courses to enjoy the 360degree view of the Virgin Islands. Watch the sunset, and munch on the tasty food. I'm missing it already

Out on the water with the White Squall II crew and your new spouse, things are great. Chris and his crew are kind and attentive, will tell you about the islands, share a few stories, and feed you well. We went to the Baths (see below) and Cooper Island, and had some of the best snorkelling at both sites: from huge rays to barricudas to all colors of littler fish

Great fun, whether it's walking through the boulders or swimming through them. We came with the White Squall II (see above), but would recommend allowing more time: it really is a day's worth of snorkelling. And for the timid snorkellers amongst you, the fish come in so shallow, you can just sit in the sand with your mask on and watch everything go by

Just down the road from Long Bay Resort, though if the sun's up, the walk is sweaty and nasty. A great little beach, with some good snorkelling or swimming, and a nice little drinks and snacks hut. Remote, but all the nicer for it

Brilliant beach, with fantastic snorkelling, and picture perfect views (both looking out, and looking back at the beach). All the cruiseshippers get deposited at Cane Garden, and let them stay there: this is the real gem of Tortola. You'll likely need a car/jeep to get there, but first-gearing it around the island is actually great fun, and a nice, relaxed (if you go slow) way of seeing the lay of the land, and all the wild chickens and cows

Nothing to get madly excited about, but worth the trip to pop into a few stores, maybe buy some local crafts (though the best place to do so is at the store by the airport, FYI), and slip into a local cafe for local food, not just your fancy hotel and restaurant fare

The place to have breakfast. Perhaps not so great if you're not at Long Bay, and the food itself is only so-so, BUT the view onto the beach is the right way to start the day. Or, at the end of the day, have a casual dinner here, as the sun goes down. Sip away at your rum drinks and just make sure you go with your trusty can of Off!
