I'm going to be in Anaheim in a few weeks for a conference. I'm debating how to spend my free time. I get in on a Sunday around 2 and fly out on the next Saturday at around 1:30. I won't have a car and I'll most likely be by myself. I'm in good shape so I'll have no problem walking from the hotel to the parks. My plan so far is:

1) on Sunday, after check-in head to DCA. Is it going to be crazy on a Sunday afternoon/night? What are the can't miss attractions?

2) Sometime during the week, head on on over to Disneyland for a night. Is one night of the week less busy than others?

3) On Friday when I don't have to head to the conference, I was planning on going to Universal Studios via the Gray line tour and paying the extra $8 for the deluxe LA tour.

4) On Saturday, before I head to the airport, I was going to make one last run at Disneyland and use the early entrance hour to get to the park an hour early.

Does this sound ok or too overly ambitious? I haven't been to Southern CA since I was 12 (I'm now 29) so I'd like to do and see as much as possible. Is there anything else I should do that I'm missing?

OK, sounds like you have a 3 day ParkHopper and planning to get the Universal Studios Deluxe Tour, which is not a bad combo at all.

As for what I would do on Sunday, I would head to DISNEYLAND, it is the classic, and I would try and spend as much time as possible there. The entertainment is amazing, the Parade of Dreams, the Fireworks and Fantasmic! are not to be missed, as are many attractions, including Indiana Jones, Pirates, Haunted Mansion, Splash Mountain, Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, and the Matterhorn.

DCA is an OK park, many folks call it a half-day park. One big difference, you can enjoy alcoholic beverages at DCA while inside of Disneyland the park is "dry".

Things to do at DCA, well, at your age group, if you like thrills, Tower of Terror isn;t bad, as is the California Screamin' roller coaster. If you are a BIG Video Game fan, Toy Story Mania! isn't bad if there is a short wait. Soarin' is nice, but the exact same attraction as at EPCOT, so no need to see it again unless you loved it the first time. It is a Hang Glider Simulator, no thrills, but a nice experience.

During summer, seems like all 7 days are about the same in crowd size.

But I would start your day Sunday at Disneyland and try and get as much done as I can, and since Disneyland closes later than DCA, I would use the night visit for Disneyland. Then on Saturday, start your day with the Magic Morning Early Entry, focusing on Fantasyland Dark Rides and then Tomorrowland, and after 10 AM, go see DCA for a few hours....

What you're missing is seeing the city of Los Angeles. The Grayline Tour of Universal and the "city tour" is fine but it's a"mad dash" through a number of tourist attractions" coupled with a day at Universal and bus rides in and out of the Los Angeles metropolitan area to/from Anaheim.

If it were me, I would skip DCA, as Darkbeer suggests, go to DL on Sunday and one evening during the week and then, on Thursday night, transfer to a hotel in Hollywood so you can spend 1-1/2 days (not a lot!!) in the second largest city in the U.S. (and one of the most 'spread out" ones).

The other reason for transferring to Hollywood is the nightlife. Anaheim is designed for families. After 4 nights of screaming kids at the local Denny's (and the like), you might want to eat in a "grown up" restaurant in Hollywood, have a beer in one of the local bars, see a movie at the famous Chinese Theater, see a concert at either the Hollywood Bowl or Greek Theater, etc, etc.

After all, if you want to see southern California, then you have to visit the CITIES of southern California -- not just the amusement parks (unless you're a DL addict, of course). But, if you're desire to go to DL is simply because it symbolizes southern California, there is so much more to see and do here.

Hollywood is very friendly to people without cars. You can walk a bit, take the metro rail and metro buses (buy a $5 DAY PASS for unlimited rides on the metro buses and metro rail) or take one (or more coach tours -- some tours are only an hour or 2; some are longer. Starline has a "hop on, hop off" tour that covers 19 tourist destinations including Universal so you can "go when you wish". You can buy the 'hop on, hop off" tour for 2 full days for just $10 more than the cost of the "one day" tour. A true buy!

Starline tours that commence in Hollywood (in front of the Chinese Theater) are listed here:

www.starlinetours.com/los-angeles-tours.asp

(I hope you can cancel part of your Anaheim hotel reservation! If not, I guess this plan isn't going to work)

You can do a hotel-to-hotel transfer via Lux Bus:

www.luxbusamerica.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc…

(They have an 8:15 pm bus that arrives in L.A. at 9:15 pm.

Have fun!

Thanks for your ideas.

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to switch hotels in the middle but I like your idea of doing more than just Universal Studios. I googled Starline tours and didn't see very good reviews so I was kind of hesitant about using them. They do have a couple of good tours with pickups in Anaheim that sound appealing though; I was just a little bit reluctant about using them.

I saw the Movie Stars Home & Trolley tour from Anaheim, as well as the Grand Tour of Los Angeles being offered by Starline. I'm not dead set on going to Universal - I went to it in FL and thought it was just ok. Any experience on either one of those tours?
