You should walk to the JR Shimbashi station and take the Yamanote line (take trains bound for Tokyo and Ueno; it's a loop route). Alight at Nippori. Then, take the South exit. The train ride should take just about 20 minutes.

I'd like to go there some day. Here is some info:

As a quilter myself, Textile Town was on my list to do as well. I took the JR Yamanote line to Nippori Station and followed the signs to the North exit and then the East exit. If you turn right out of the station and work your way diagonally towards the left you will hit Fabric Street. The street has big blue pennants hanging from the buildings. I printed out a map found at www.netlaputa.ne.jp/~nippori/map/map.html to take with me. It is all in Japanese but I just showed it to people and they pointed me in the right direction. It was an amazing place. A couple of suggestions if you don't mind - have cash with you as most places did not take credit cards and I could not find an ATM that would work with my bank card. I had to find a bank to change up some travelers cheques- an experience in itself! Also, I don't know if you will have weight problems with your luggage, but we were at the beginning of a 5 week trip and I didn't want to have to pack my fabric with me, so I brought along several large padded envelopes and mailed my fabric back home. You can get 3-4 meters of fabric in one - 6 meters cost me about 2700Yen to Toronto. Happy quilting!

Thanks so much to both of you for your help!

Hm, I am really a bit worried, if I will manage to find the trains I need. How do I know, if it is the train to Uneo when I can´t read the letters?

Thanks for the lovely blogs, too - can´t wait to come...

To the quilting lady:

Sending fabric back home seems to be a great idea.

I am sure, that I´ll buy a lot. I have a question

about the price of fabric. Lets say, just a printed

cotton, what does it cost per yard? Do you know some other fabric stores I should not miss?

Thanks, greetings Q.

The signs are clearly marked in English. No worries about getting on the wrong train. Also, according to this station map (correct up to this minute), you will board the Ueno/Tokyo bound train on platform 5 at Shimbashi station.

This is a typical sign at a JR Yamanote line station. The designated color of this line is apple green:

Hi,Quiltlover - When I was looking for information a poster gave me this website that I found really helpful …askingfortrouble.org/crafts/… - there are a couple of stores listed with instructions on how to get to them. The links to the maps are great - if you can print them off it will be really helpful. I also came across these places near Kichijoji Station (about 15 minutes from the Shinjuku Station on the Chuo Line) when I was researching but I did not get to them - Yuzawaya, Quilt House Yama and Cotton Field. To get to Yuzawaya take the express train from platform 15 at Shinjuku Station using the Chuo Line to Kichijoji Station. Take the park entrance, when you clear the barriers you will see the escalators on your left - go up these, then you will see a set of stairs directly on your left, take these - they are the entrance to Yuzawaya - the fabric is on the 4th floor. I found this site that had information on Yazawaya - http://tuttifruiti.blogspot.com?2007/10.shops.html - also tells you about Cotton Field.

I can't remember exactly how much the fabric cost but it was somewhere around 600yen and up to 1000+yen a yard. Hope this helps.

How I would love to go to the Quiltweek in Yokohama, it should be amazing. Unfortunately, most of the fabric I bought in Tokyo went to my daughter and friends in my stitch and chat group. I kept just enough for a small wall hanging I'm doing based on photos I took of Mt. Fuji. But now I have a great reason to go back to Japan so I can buy some more fabric just for myself! Enjoy yourself in November!
