“Don't believe all the negative reviews.....”

Gran Melia Puerto Rico

Honestly, Im not sure what standard some of these people live on or expect.. but you really can't believe all the negative reviews you read. Prior to going on our trip, we read these reviews, after we had booked our trip and got alittle skeptical thinking "Uh oh, did we make the wrong choice in resort?"

We checked into Gran Melia on 6/13. We called in advance for an early checkin, as we arrived at the hotel by 12pm. The front desk 'said' they knew nothing of this, when we personally spoke to someone 3 days before. So as you can imagine, we thought, oh no, here we go. They said if we waited till 3pm, we could change and they would hold our bags, and B-12 would eventually be our room. If we wanted a room immediately, B-7 was open but it was on the furthest part of the resort. Then they offered for an additional $75 a night, we could be upgraded to Royal Service, and in room 2013, which was directly next to the pool (the private royal service pool). This also included butler service, Pillow menu per evening (which I will say was really nothing different than the pillows we already had), free continental breakfast (which is a HUGE plus since its $15 per person per day), complimentary happy hour every evening from 6-9pm (which is huge when drinks cost $10), private access to the royal service pool and many other things....We took it and can honestly say, it made a world of a difference in our stay.

The rooms were great. COMFY bed, couch, nice sized bathroom, flat screen TV's, marble floors, outside area.. Our rooms were cleaned every day by the time we came back in (around 4pm) - except one day where we called and they were there in 5 minutes. One thing, our bathroom smelt like Mildew here and there when we went in, but it wasnt that big of a deal. Overall the room was extremely clean. On our first night, we even got a complimentary bottle of champagne which we thought was awesome.

Private pool made a huge difference since the mail pool was crawling with loud kids all day long. RENT A CAR ( a jeep if you can). If you just want to go and lay at the pool all day, then dont bother but if you want to get out and do whatever you want... We drove around the island, went to different private beaches, ate at the roadside shacks, spent time in Old San Juan, hiked the rain forest.. It is SO worth it to get out and do your own thing and not be dependant on cabs, and shuttle buses. Definiately made our stay 75% better. The resort is sort of located in the middle of nowhere.. and you can't walk to surrounding areas.. so it makes a big deal.

There is no beach, you are right... not a huge deal to me, because I read that in the reviews before going.. Im a pool girl anyways. We found a small beach that you could defintely go in the water if you wanted, down the road from the resort so it wasnt a big deal.. but if you are a beach person, red flag for you.

Food was good yes, but overpriced.. but what resort isnt? When they know that most people come, dont have a car to get out and do what they want, why wouldnt they charge up the food/drinks? Thats just common sense, and no reason to down the hotel about... its no different if you want to a resort in Puerto Rico, Jamaica or Mexico. But was it overpriced? Yes it was. What can you do.

Butler service and staff were never once a problem to us. They were attentive, called us to check in on us, there were golf carts riding all the time back and forth to take you from your room to the main house (the walk could be long to some)... no negative things to say about the staff. Very accomodating.

Overall, would I go back to the Gran Melia if the opportunity arose? Of course, or Id stay at another one of their resorts around the world. Overall, beside the few negative things that I mentioned, everything was awesome during our stay and I will highly recommend the resort to others.

“Beautiful Grounds .... terrible service”

Went to the Gran Melia for a birthday celebration with a group of 15 people. The grounds and the layout were superb but the rest of the trip was marred by poor service. The food was expensive and at best poorly prepared - we went off site and had great meals. Our group had similar problems to previous bloggers with regards to room maintenance and check in problems. Everything just seemed disorganized with most of the staff indifferent at best. Additionally they do charge extra for everything. I normally don't post negative reviews but in this case the lack of attention to even the most basic fundamentals of customer service really disappointed me.

My friend and I came back from this resort last week.....The staff for the most part were unfriendly and not very helpful. The first full day we were there....our room was not cleaned until approx. 6:30pm after calling to find out why. When it was cleaned.... when I say cleaned..... I mean we got clean towels and the bed was done...thats it! The mini-bar was not replenished, the floors were not swept, etc. To add to that, there was no price menu for the mini-bar. I called for the prices and they assured me someone would come bring me a list. Three days later.....no list. The bed was VERY comfortable and the room was nice. I lost a sandal out of my bag on the long walk to my room...I could not find it. The next day I called the front desk to see if anyone had found it......I got transferred to six different areas...then they hung up on me without an answer. The restaurants were very expensive. The japanese restaurant was worth it, but I can't say the same for the italian restaurant. The casino is shady people! If you do go to gamble...please gamble with caution. I might suggest to stay away from the free boos....

“Gran Mila, hmmmmm”

As with other reviewers, I think everyone is agreement that this place is extremely over priced. The room rates are priced decently. How so ever they will nickle and dime you to death. There is a fee for everything, and I mean everything. Drinks average 10 a piece. (not all that bad). How ever the food is extremely overpriced for what you get. $15.00 for a McDonalds quality Cheeseburger just seemed a little on the high side. Also, pre warning. You can not bring any type of food or coolers on the grounds. everything has to be purchased from the hotel.
If your looking for action, you may want to consider somewhere else, on the other hand if you want a laid back experience this is the place. Also there are no suitable beaches, you can't enter the water, it's nothing but rock, coral and sea weed.
If you do come, stay at the pool bar, cheapest food , best service and most action.
The place is beautiful and the rooms are nice, but thats where it stops.

We value your comments and concerns regarding our resort. Gran Melia Puerto Rico has three of the best chefs on the island who have belonged on the National Culinary Team of Puerto Rico and have won gold and silver medals, respectively. Our restaurants are truly top quality and the food is certainly exquisite. I must point out my disappointment in never having the chance personally to turn your culinary experience around into an unforgettable experience.

I encourage you to return to Gran Melia Puerto Rico in any of your future vacations and allow us to demonstrate we truly are a wonderful resort.

“Good (not Great) stay at the Gran Melia”

Gran Melia Puerto Rico

3 of 5 stars

I rely on tripadvisor reviews, so I feel it is only fair to write my own.

The Gran Melia is a beautiful property, like others have said, that needs a little tweeking. The first thing - rent a car. Absolutely, without a doubt, the best thing we did. Puerto Rico is really easy to drive around and we used our car to drive into San Juan about every night and drive to local bakeries to get lunch etc. Without a car, i think we would have been really unhappy.

The pool is gorgeous. very big, lots of built in beds, very clean, great temperature. It was packed with kids over the weekend (we do not have kids) which was a little "loud" for our taste but they were just kids being kids, so we can't complain. Monday and Tuesday the pool was very quiet.

Our room was nice, always cleaned promptly, very comfy bed, great flat screen tv with all the american channels. We found service very friendly and willing to help.

We did not like the beach at the property (full of rocks, like the pictures show) but we took our rental car a few miles down the road to Luquillo Beach which was beautiful, easy to find and almost empty on a Monday. Highly recommend that.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel to families much more than singles and also I cannot say enough about having a car to leave the property. There is a lot to see in Puerto Rico. The Gran Melia served as a perfect suitable "home base" but the beach on property and lack of diverse restaurant options made our rental car worth 10x what we paid for it.
