“A Unique Experience”

Mopan River Resort

We just returned from a week long stay at Mopan River Resort. We had a great time and this is definitely one of our most memorable vacations. We also took our twenty year old twins and they had a great time too. Joining us at the resort were many of our friends, making the trip all the more enjoyable.

Ron & Kim are the perfect hosts and made our group feel welcome. The food was great and we loved their signature drink, the banana velvet.

We enjoyed all of the excursions that we went on. Excellent guides accompanied us on each one. This place is perfect for those that like an active vacation, but it is always an option to stay at the resort and enjoy a day at the pool or to shop in the nearby town.

We did have occasional power outages, but after leaving the resort we read in the paper that it was a nationwide problem, so I don't believe that it was a problem with the resort.

I was a little nervous about traveling to the jungle, but at no time did it feel unsafe at the resort or on any of the outings. For those looking for an out of the ordinary vacation, I would highly recommend the Mopan River Resort.

Mopan River Resort

Jun 4, 2008

My husband and I have just returned from an adventure filled 7 nights at Mopan River Resort. We were with a group of 23 people that were old friends and some friends of friends (the ages ranging from 20 to 68). Most all of the reviews on Tripadvisor rave about the food, the grounds, the bungalows and the tours and I agree whole heartedly with all the great reviews. I would like to touch on a few things that are not mentioned that you may want to know. Breakfast is served from 7am to 8 am and then you hop on the ferry boat to take you right across the river to the town of Benque Viejo to meet your tour bus for the day or half day tours. The town is right across the river you can see it, but there is no bridge or way to walk across. They will however take you by boat. The locals are washing their clothes on the rocks and the kids are swimming, the view really takes you back to another place in time. If you are on the half day tour you are back to the resort for lunch. If you are on the full day tours they pack a delicious sack lunch for you that you choose the night before. Happy hour and appetizers are at 6pm, dinner at 7pm – a time for everything and everything on time.

The bungalows have electricity and air conditioning and a fridge filled with cold drinks. The electricity did have its issues, but we were told that was atypical. Some days it would go off two or three times – some days not at all. I didn’t find that to be any big deal since you could still find cold beer on ice in the main lodge. To me, it added to that “adventure” feel of the vacation. However, some of the guys had issue with the a/c being off. Most of the tours require some level of physical fitness. We joked that it was sure hard work having so much fun. Those people that enjoy having their days scheduled and are physically fit, ready for adventure, climbing, walking and paddling (and don’t want to sleep late) will find this to be the ultimate vacation experience.

“Great little resort”

Mopan River Resort

5 of 5 stars

We finished a 3 /12 week vacation in Belize and Guatemala with five nights at the Mopan River Resort. My wife and I are active 60+s, who did a lot of scuba diving, snorkeling and hiking before getting to MRR. This was a great end to a very active vacation.

We thought the cabanas were incredible; spacious, comfortable, plenty private, extremely well furnished and maintained, with beautiful views of the river and gorgeous grounds. Many guests commented that the website does not do justice to the beauty of the grounds or rooms.

We enjoyed every tour, particularly Che Chem Ha; it is an amazing journey up and into that cave. I was the only guest that requested, at extra cost, a trip to the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave. Kim booked it for me with no hassle. ATM was the best cave of the trip, but be prepared for a long and very vigorous day; it is not for everybody, do your research to see if you want to try it.

We spent three nights in and on the edge of Tikal before MRR. I would strongly urge folks to spend at least one night there rather than go on a day trip. The sunrise tour is fabulous, but starts from the local hotel at 4:45am. The benefit is you see lots of the park out of the heat of the day. Sunset/moonrise is also very inspiring and we were lucky enough to catch a full moon.

In summary a great deal, a great spot, excellent food with plenty of variety. An open bar with skillfully prepared mixed drinks plus all the Belikin's you might want always stocked in your room is an additional plus.

Mopan River Resort

Can't say enough about the Mopan River Resort. Kim & Ron, the owners, do everything possible to ensure that all their guests enjoy themselves and feel cared for. The ambiance is fantastic -- you truly feel that they are sincerely interested in assuring your pleasure; everything is prepared, the cabanas are great; the grounds, beautiful; the food and drink outstanding; the activities well-planned and stimulating. You can enjoy yourself just kicking back on the deck, but there is so much else to do. And, with a maximum of 25 guests, you feel special. It really is nice to have everything included! We travel quite a bit, and seldom feel the desire to return to someplace we have visited, but we will return to Kim & Ron's place on the river -- probably with our grown kids who would love the mix of Mayan sites and varied water-based activities. I can't imagine anyone not finding the experience of staying at the Mopan River Resort to be a truly memorable one.

“Adventure Awaits”

Mopan River Resort

We were looking for a small place with a romantic setting, good food, adventure and fun. Well we got all of these at Mopan. I didn't want the hassle of booking tours with different companies and ending up on the big shopping tour buses. All of our tours were in a van with a small group and a guide who took us. We stayed 5 nights in this beautiful jungle resort by the river. Our cabana was lovely and private. We had an amazing time getting to know the other guests and the owners and swapping travel and other stories. We went river kayaking, climbed Mayan ruins in Belize and Guatemala, went cave tubing, visited an ancient Mayan pottery cave and wondered around the friendly little village across the river and talked to the locals. Be prepared for jungle noises, you really are amidst those nature CD sounds. We could have chosen to hang out at the cabana instead of going on tour but we didn't want to miss any of the adventure so away we went. If you want the commercialized big super-inclusive luxurious resorts go to Cancun. This place is kind of like a sophisticated adult summer camp with rum (the coconut rum is the best). Ask Victor the bartender to make you his special once you've had enough banana velvets. The pulled pork sandwiches are divine. If you want a unique experience with a lot of adventure and real travel (bumpy roads and all), come to Mopan. You won't be disappointed. I'd allow at least 4-7 days taking a lot of the area's treasures in. I can say we were happy to have 4 days on the beach on Ambergris Caye afterward to rest from our early morning adventures and non-stop fun.
