I stayed at the Green Hotel in Ochanomizu from May 1 to May 4. It was my first visit to Japan outside of Narita and the hotel was a perfect find.
The hotel is a 5-10 minute walk from the nearest train station, Ochanomizu. There are no elevators or escalators at the train station, but I personally didn't find it to be too big of a hassle. Most people have luggage with wheels on them and the stairs weren't as daunting in real life as previous reviews make them out to be. I did get lost the first time I tried to find the hotel, but maps on the streets along with the map from the website should be enough to help you find your bearings.
I was a little skeptical about actually being able to keep my reservation because I booked it online at expedia.ca. I'm glad to say that they found my reservation quickly and they understood what I was trying to say with a few hand gestures and basic, and slowly annunciated English. It's absolutely key English speakers speak in a slow and very deliberate manner so that they can understand. I stayed in room 127 which I eventually found out was on the 10th floor (ask which floor you are on if you are confused).
The room was small, but comfortable, especially since I travelled alone. The door was just barely big enough to fit someone of my height. Someone with a 6' frame WILL have to hunker down a little while walking into the room. Inside there was a small work desk; a table with a tea pot, tea bags, and cups; a small mini fridge; a night stand with an alarm clock with only Japanese labels; and the very comfortable bed. There is an air conditioning unit in the room which does a good job of cooling or heating the room in a hurry. The TV is wall mounted and has some free channels. I think I watched a total of 10 minutes of TV during my time there. There are also two robes (yukata) and belts (obi). You may want to find a youtube video to learn how to properly tie the belt. To hang your jacket(s) and pant(s), there are two hooks with two hangers on each of them. You'll definitely have to live out of your suitcase.
There is no wireless internet, but they offer free wired internet for which you'll have to go to the front desk and request an internet kit. The cable outlet is located on the box that the TV is connected to on the wall and does not look anything like the outlet pictured in their guide on how to set up the connection. DO NOT become fixated on finding an outlet that looks like the one in the guide because you will not find it and you'll find yourself very frustrated. Once you get the connection up and running though, it is a fantastic connection.
The washroom is small, but it's fairly typical of a Japanese washroom as far as I can tell. It came with two toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, and shaving cream. There were also two pump bottles for bathing; one for shampoo and another for body wash. The toilet comes with a bidet as well, for anyone who is interested in that kind of stuff.
This hotel is generally for business travelers and for travelers on a budget therefore there is not swimming pool. It's certainly not a draw back though because at about $100/night, there were many other little qualities that made this hotel, at this price, an extremely good value.
First (and the biggest attraction of all) is the fact that it's only about a 5-minute brisk walk (maybe a 10-minute relaxed walk) to Ochanomizu station, which in turn is only two stations away from Tokyo Station. Tokyo Station is a major hub and you can get to almost anywhere from there (even on the Shinkansen). My tip is to go to the Ticket Office and buy a day pass. They cost me about ¥1550 yen and lasted the whole day.
Other strong points include a 24-hour convenience store just a few doors down (called "Family Mart"), and many little restaurants close to Ochanomizu statement. It's easy to find cheap food if you need it (in fact, I went out for some bread, rice balls, and instant noodles at 11:30pm because I got the munchies). There are also western food establishments nearby like Denny's, McDonald's, KFC, and Subway just to name a few. (top: for anyone going to McD's, "meals" are referred to as "sets"). You can also buy food tickets for meals in the hotel's restaurant, but I decided to get my food outside. Also of note, on every floor there is a machine that dispenses tea, hot water, and lukewarm water (no cold water).
Nearby you will also find Akihabara which is a destination for people looking for electronics. It's literally a 5-10 minute walk and is a great place to walk around during the evening. There are also some nice ramen places around the area to eat at. The hotel staff were able to direct me to Akihabara with clear directions and even a map that they provided me with.
I'm a very cautious person and my luggage/laptop case each had locks on them. I was always careful to lock up each of them before heading out for the day during my first day. I became very comfortable though and just left my laptop out in the open. I came back to my nicely cleaned room and everything was perfect, laptop and all. Their staff is top notch and have a good-enough command of English.
If I had to nit pick I would say that I wish they had wireless internet. There is also no internet terminal to use on the premises, which could be a problem for someone who wants/needs internet access and doesn't have their own laptop. I could get the phone in the lobby to make international calls, despite repeated attempts and repeatedly reading the simple english instructions.
These nitpicks are really minor though, as I had an exceptional experience at Tokyo Green Hotel Ochanomizu. I will definitely return again when I go back to Tokyo.
