Let me just start out by saying, I will be back to the Grand Oasis next year!!!
I first cam across this hotel after a family member offered me use of their vacation club. It was one of two choices available. I began an exhaustive and exhausting search of pictures and reviews of the hotel. For all you whiners out there please keep your thoughts to yourselves. It makes it very difficult when people post crappy reviews over nothing!!. I read a few of these reviews which cast doubt over the shining reviews posted by others. On top of that, I couldn't find any close up pictures of real people enjoying the resort. Finally, my prayers were answered. Two weeks into my search, I came across a family's post. They had tons of great pictures and worthwhile words. This was the beginning of my fabulous trip.
My grandmother and I arrived to four star treatment. The grounds are gorgeous! We were driven to our hotel by one of the bell boys and led to our first floor ocean view room. The first thing I checked was the bed. I don't know what the whiners are talking about but our beds were super comfortable. The room was very clean. You could tell the bathtub had some age but it was CLEAN. The TV was small for the unit (maybe a 19 inch) but really, did you come to the hotel to sit in your room and watch TV? When I did need it, it worked just fine.
Each night my grandmother and I dined at a different restaurant. Now, I should say, I do not eat meat (only fish) so the first afternoon was not the best for me in terms of snacks. We dined at the seafood restaurant the first night and found the pasta under seasoned... but that was the worst of it. EVERY meal after that was great! We ate at La Caraibes (crepes), Rigolettos (Italian), the Santa Fe Grill (Tex Mex ) restaraunt and of course El Cayuco (the main buffet restaraunt). There are NO reservations for these places but you should arrive 15 - 20 mnutes before you want to eat as the kitchen gets filled with orders quickly (this does not apply to the buffet restaurant). You can sit by the bar until they are ready to seat you for dinner. When you are done eating, make sure you are able to check out the theater for a great show (performances are not every night so check the schedule).
Service was A1 at the Oasis. Everyone was very helpful and courteous both in person and over the telephone. Our maid did not speak English so it helped that I could at least hold a conversation in Spanish (college tuition did something for me!) I took an early day ATV tour (you have to try it) and during my absence, the maid came and took my grandmother to lunch. She went back to work and returned to see her back to her room. Another employee, during his off time, took me into downtown Puerto Plata to buy gifts for my family (The hotel prices for gifts and toiletries are inflated so bring all your necessities from home). I could go on an on but it seems I have already become one of those long winded post people (sorry but I hoped to help someone who felt as I did). Be advised that I traveled during the off season so it was not over crowded. I think this added to my experience. At the end of July, the hotel is about to open up a casino, the new home for their spa services (FANTASTIC and priced nice - I had an hour deep tissue massage and 30 min facial for $100) and four new beautiful housing facilities. All this to say, if you go, you WILL NOT be disappointed! See you next year!
