My sister and I just returned from a long weekend getaway at Casa Colonial. Each day we kept telling each other how much we loved this hotel. We both recommend, in fact, urge you to find a way to spend at least a few nights here next time you are looking for a getaway weekend.
The grounds and physical aesthetic of the hotel is elegant and breathtaking: huge windows, beautiful long curtains, shiny marble floors, and original fixtures. Hot water was not consistent, but usually did come on eventually. You also always had the option of using the spa or gym shower which was always hot with heated water. We were amazed at how *comfortable* the beds, cushions for the lounge chairs and spa chairs were. Because this is a small, five-star, boutique hotel, there is a sense of intimacy as there aren't a lot of guests and everyone seemed friendly to each other. But refreshingly, it definitely isn't a party hotel and the overall vibe is VERY peaceful.
Our experience with the staff was overwhelmingly positive. They were friendly, sincere, and helpful. Unlike other hotels and beach destinations, we didn't feel like the staff were disingenuous or just looking for tips. We were extremely pleased with the service in both the spa and the restaurants/cafes.
The restaurant is definitely expensive, but the food was truly exceptional. We ate two meals at the restaurant and found the wine list impressive. The dishes themselves were creatively conceived, beautifully presented and just down right delicious!
The spa has a menu of choices. Between the two of us we had a wrap, massages and a facial. The facial and massages were the highlight. The therapists were also interested in honest feedback. The spa manager was very friendly and introduced herself to us.
Having read some of the other reviews, this leads me to also respond to the post about poor management. Our experience with management couldn't have been more different. First of all, it is clear that management as a whole is concerned with the training and preparation of all staff. Second of all, the general manager was indeed on site while we there. He was calm, professional and always seemed focused. He clearly made it of his concern to know and greet the guests at the hotel. In our conversations with him, it seemed clear that he was very conscientious about his work and wanted to continue to improve the hotel in any way he could.
So obviously, we really recommend this hotel. It is true that there are hotels on either side, but once you are at the pool or sitting in the cafe, you certainly feel like you're in your own oasis. The area of Puerta Plata has a plaza with some restaurants, lounges, bars and discos if you do want something more lively one night. The hotel will arrange for you to take a golf cart over there. As for going even further from the hotel, the concierge is helpful and will make both suggestions and arrangements.
