I have read some of the other reviews and also did not experience some of the same things as other travellers. I will reiterate that this is a very QUIET and SECLUDED resort. There is no nightlife close by except for the shops at the Puntacana Galeries, which has free shuttles running about 5 times each day, and even at that it is only bowling and 3 restaurants. Breakfast is a big buffet every morning with decent service (nothing great). There are about 6 restaurant options, all of which are moderately to high priced. La Yola restaurant at the Marina was our favorite dinner by far and cost each couple around $100 (including drinks, appetizers, and entree). Cocoloba at the golf club was about $25 and up per entree, and Franco's on the resort is great for lunch...pizzas $9, and at dinner they have pizzas, sandwiches, salads etc. for around the same.
You can rent a golf cart at the resort and explore, which we highly recommend. This is how we found the Six Senses Spa and did a couples massage the next day. Staff here was incredibly friendly and helpful and they have some great specials when you get there.
Bavaro, which is where all of the all-inclusive resorts are, is about 40 minutes away and an $80 cab ride. We rented a car for $67 instead and drove ourselves. The interesting thing about going to Bavaro is that you get there and can't see any of the other resorts because they are all hidden behind huge security gates and walls. If you want to go to a casino you have to have a reservation and men have to wear pants and closed shoes. We were driving around at nightime (2 couples) and felt unsafe. I have never felt unsafe at any other international destination, so when we got back to the resort at Punta Cana we were even more happy with where we were staying.
Now, having said all of that...people in the Dominican do NOT speak much english...even at the resorts, so be prepared. Drinks at the resort are about $8, which includes taxes and tip. The room was not great by any means, but it was relatively inexpensive and clean. The concierge was not helpful at all, so we figured out things on our own. So, overall I would say that the resort was nice. I probably would not go back to the Dominican though...I have been to other destinations that I prefer in the Caribbean.
