Upon landing and taking a private taxi bus through the city and power sliding while it's raining along the highway by the coast my family and I could already tell this trip was going to be quite interesting. We arrived at the hotel around 4p local and were greeted with champagne which was nice. We were told our rooms (6 in group) wouldn't be ready for another 15-20 minutes so we thought we'd grab a little something to eat at the los arcos snack bar at the resort. It took about 10 minutes just for service and drinks and then another 25-30 for the food. We finally got to our rooms, they were nice and roomy. A good view from our balcony (6th floor) anything lower you may have some competition with some trees for a view. The buffets were probably the best thing they had going. New styles every night (mexican, oriental, italian) and a pretty good variety. Get there early however because food will run out especially desserts. For a person like myself who doesn't really do breakfast I'd say it was their best buffet. The resort Italian restaurant was ok, you can tell they made an attempt but slow service and a waiter rolling their eyes at my sister for spilling some of her water left us with a bad taste. Don Quixote was really classy, there was a pianist playing background music while we ate, better service. The overall service for the restaurants and buffets was very indifferent they have a couple excellent servers but most aren't that impressive. Another big thing was people getting sick. I was the only one of our group of 6 that did not get sick. We didn't talk to other guests about that but by reading the reviews I have no doubt others did were as well.
Downtown
The city of PV is something you have to see, just walking the streets especially not in the heart of downtown you can really get that cultural experience and see how people live. If that's what you want pay the 4-6peso's and take the bus, if not there are more than enough taxi's for you to get around. On a side note if you've read some reviews on the taco bar's don't go searching for them. We found the 3-4 of them that were recommended on tripadvisor and were all closed or not where they said they were. If you want to try one I'll recommend just going to one where you see a lot of locals eating at. Also about taking the bus, the stop, to go back to the resort is at the intersection of Insurgentes & Basilio Badillo there is a convienent store called "six" there.
Tours/Sights
-I don't recommend the bus tour of Puerto Vallarta unless you don't mind stopping and wanting to buy stuff. It will literally waste almost half you day just waiting while they take you into these jewelery/tourist shops set up with the tour group. We actually left the tour and took taxi's and buses back because it was that bad.
-I do highly recommend for your adventure types to do the Dune Buggy tour (or the ATV, same tour). It was amazing, unless you aren't a big fan on getting dirty and muddy you will have a blast.
-The Zoo is amazing, and really only .5mile from the resort. You have to go through the village/town of Mismaloya and it will be on your left, can't miss it. It's only $9 and is probably the best zoo I've ever been too. There were a good amount of animals for it being a smaller than a city zoo in the US but the animals actually had personality and looked to be very well taken care of. The exhibits let you get really close, I mean really close to some animals. Tigers/Jaguars/Bear and 2 Wolves that were only about 8ft below you. Whole variety of animals and really something worth seeing.
Conclusion
-Overall customer service was mediocore I really think it comes from lack of training by whoever is in charge.
-Don't expect to come here and be treated like a king or queen because more than likely it won't happen.
-I know this sounds bad saying this but expect to get sick, for diarrhea, buy some Lomotil down there and for vomiting well, just do the best you can to get everything out of your system.
For me I enjoyed the trip but everyone around me was sick for a day or two. Just be careful what you eat, work in to vacation mode, start out with familiar food perferably fruit/vegetables/bread and then work into the stuff you don't eat often. I myself didn't eat any meat the first day.
