First, I should say I'm not a difficult person to please while traveling. Next, this property is beautiful, and very well-kept. The attention to detail in cleaning, and the floors throughout, are really impressive. Location is so-so. It's a :15 cab ride to El Centro and the Malecon, and :20 to the Zona Romantica. Food was average, though the nachos were excellent; be prepared to pay for the food and drinks though. It is expensive. Again, fine for me, as I expected that. Now, for the bad.
I had a reservation for $111.00 per night. Tried to upgrade upon check-in to a 9th floor room after reading here that the extra $50 is worth it. Dealt with the manager, or perhaps the assistant, who quoted $75.00 extra per night. Again, fine. I was wiling to pay. But the room would be an hour to be ready. Ok again. Came back after 1.5 hours. Not ready. Would be ready in another hour. Came back in an hour. Not ready. Come to find out after standing at the desk for :40 that there was no 9th floor room available. I'm a bit perturbed by this point, so I explain I just want my original room at the original rate. This time a young woman is helping me, and she checks me in on the 8th floor at the original rate of $111.00. I had her write it down so that I had it in writing (I'm a lawyer, occupational hazard). Great room, fab view.
Went to check out and my bill has the upgrade rate, for a total of nearly $400 mas. No good, and I explain why to the manager, who I can see isn't interested or listening. I explain I'm not paying for an upgrade I didn't get. No food, no extras, no 9th floor. Period. He explains that I did get an upgrade, and that the 8th floor was an upgrade. We argued for :20. Unbelievable. I then understood clearly that he was making every attempt to draw out the process so that I'd have to leave for my plane. I'd read elsewhere that this is a common ploy. So I explained, no, no Senor, I came down very early, and I have all the time in the world. Oh, the dismay. So now, he changes his tune to explain that he would give me a reduced upgrade rate (after consulting his calculator and furiously punching in numbers - always a bad sign in Mexico) of $25.00 per night, admitting that the woman who checked me in had made a mistake of quoting the original rate. I pull out the original reservation and hand-written note from his employee showing that my rate was what it was. No go. He generates a new invoice for a total of $130 more than they agreed, take it or leave it. I did not want to tour a jail so I signed and told him what he fool he was. I'll get the $ back - in federal court here if necessary -because they stole from me, and I won't let that go. So buyer beware, they will charge you more any way they can, and you have no leverage once they do. You're in Mexico, and you are at their mercy. I will never set foot in the place again, and what a shame. It could be a first-class hotel.
