If your idea of luxury is the Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons brocade, velvet, swags and overstuffed sofa school, then this hotel is not for you. On the other hand, if you want stunning contemporary style, exquisite furnishings, top-class service, wow-factor bathrooms, all wrapped in a dramatic modernist architectural package, then you will love the Sofitel Montreal. It is deliberately 21st Century, right down to the lobby music. The rooms are large and nicely furnished (I had a deluxe twin), with dramatic city views from floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall windows, the bathrooms are huge, with a separate shower and very good lighting, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, Canadian contemporary art decorates the rooms and public spaces. Scented candles perfume the lobby with a pleasant ambiance. The beds are most comfortable. The hotel location is great for the Downtown area: the Peel Metro stop is one block away, as the entrance to Montreal`s vast underground city.
It`s not often that I can say that my experience of a hotel was almost energizing or uplifting -- and I travel a lot -- but frankly this is how I felt about this Sofitel. My only niggles are that the lobby mood music can be intrusively loud, so that sometimes one has the sense that one has accidentally walked into a hip bar rather than a cool hotel, and food prices are, well, pricey.
Nevertheless, I loved this hotel, and would choose it every time over the conventional, oh-so-familiar 4 and 5 star chain hotels that abound in Montreal.
