We had a reservation through our travel agency and when we arrived they put us in a room which on the floor map was named "service area" and whose its original function was not that of a room. It was actually a dark corridor with a window looking inside the hotel, divided into 2 parts with two beds along this corridor,or the so called room, you name it, and with no bath tub in the bathroom, which is incomprehensible for a four star hotel. When we told the receptionist that we could not stay in there and that we wanted to change room she told us that that was it, nothing she could do about it. We threatened to call tourist police, because the room was not a legal room and only then she moved us to another hotel since there was not any other available room in their hotel. Finally, the receptionist's unmannerly and ironic conduct should also be taken into account.

“Nice Rooms and location, poor surrounding atmosphere”

The Hotel Roma was everything you would want in a hotel for the price. It was conveniently located a few blocks from the train station and the Duomo. The room was large and comfortable. The decor was classic and there were some nice features such as automatic shades that you could open/close from your bed. The breakfast spread was very good and there was a tremendous variety for a continental breakfast. The staff was helpful and courteous. The only major drawback was that our room faced the Piazza Maria Novella which was apparently a late night hangout for the youngsters of Florence and was quite noisy well into the night. If you do stay there, request a room on the side away from the square, the view, although nice, is not worth the aggravation of listening to police sirens, shattering glass, and speeding scooters.

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights in September 2004 and found that it was a good place to stay. A close walk from the train station, a real plus for us! The room was toward the back of the building, with a view of a wall, but it was quiet, and we didn't need a view. The lounge area is quite nice maybe even a little impressive and the bartender was attentive, but didn't speak english which was a little bit of a barrier for us. The front desk people all spoke english, and helped us with setting up tours & helping us out with maps and such. The bathroom is equipped excessively with every little toiletry you might need or have forgotten (toothbrush, shoe polish, Q-tips, soaps, emory boards, etc.). There is an Irish bar almost next door, which is full of Americans, which we thought was nice and yet kind of bizarre, but everyone is a tourist there and wants to talk with other tourists, so worth a night cap at least. We would probably stay there again if we got chance to return.

“Nice but problems”

This was a great little hotel with nice rooms in a good location. The corner can be quite noisy at night, with a loud bar right outside the windows.

We had problems when checking out as the Hotel wanted us to pay for our stay after we had already paid them with our travel voucher from the travel company who booked the trip. They wouldn't accept the voucher and charged us a higher rate for the room beyond the rate we paid the travel company. We were forced to pay again with our credit card.

After getting home the travel company would not pay us back the money that the hotel charged us. We fought it with the credit card company and they couldn't get the hotel to back off our payment.

So the hotel got paid twice for our stay and we were out the money. The hotel never helped us out at all with even a discount for the 2nd payment to them.

“Good proximity to train station”

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights during our honeymoon in Italy during Sept. 2001. It is 2 blocks from the train station, so this is the main reason why we stayed at the hotel. It is also close to many other Florence attractions (all within walking distance). We had booked a "superior" or "deluxe" room (have to pay extra for this). This means that the room is bigger. Unfortunately, this meant that the room faced the piazza, which was VERY noisy from car, bus, moped, and human traffic. We had our room switched to the back of the hotel after the first night. It was much smaller and quieter. Our window faced a brick wall, though! They refused to reduce the room rate, however, even though we were staying in a cheaper room. Breakfast was excellent (like most hotels in Italy, breakfast is included in the rate). Probably would stay somewhere else if we went back to Florence.
