“Lovely Santa Maria Novella”

Santa Maria Novella Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Los Angeles, CA
Sep 28, 2008

We stayed at the Hotel Santa Maria Novella September 7 through September 9 2008.

What we liked:

ROOM SIZE: We were upgraded to a Junior Suite, that certainly helped. We could have hosted a dance in the room it was so large. We also had a very nice view of the Santa Maria Novella church--though there is construction in the piazza. However, because of the current construction there are also no cars which reduces the sound. The construction sound in the morning is minimal, but if you're a light sleeper it might wake you up.

BATHROOM: The bathroom was very nice. It was done entirely in marble and had a rain showerhead and an ample sink/counter area. A negative note though--the toilet seat didn't like to stay in place...that's all I'll say about that.

LOBBY: The lobby was nicely appointed and the front desk staff was very pleasant. There were a number of small sitting rooms throughout the ground floor of the hotel. Also, downstairs there is a computer with internet for Hotel guests.

What could have been better...

BREAKFAST: Their breakfast room is lovely, however, the breakfast service is understaffed and often ran out of eggs and other items. The servers are mostly pleasant, but they struggled to keep up with the crowd of people.

NOISE FROM PUB: On Sunday night (this was not the case on Monday, our second night) there was a lot of noise from the pub that is on the street. It was just under our window. It lasted until after midnight. It wasn't the worst thing in the world, but it took me a while to block it out and get to sleep.

CONSTRUCTION: This was far less of an issue than many reviews made it out to be; however, it's not the best view in the world. The construction also crowds the walking space around the hotel a bit. Overall, I felt this was minor, but it's worth mentioning. On a positive note though, it has halted traffic into the piazza which probably significantly reduced the noise. It also looks like they should be completing it sometime in the near future, so if you're planning your trip for spring 2009 or later it *should* be done (but then again, it's Italy).

ROOM DECOR: This is me getting a bit picky. While our Junior Suite was lovely and huge, it felt a bit bare. Not a lot of things on the walls and not a lot of furniture to fill up the space. Not a big deal as the room was quite nice, but just something to mention.

OVERALL...

Overall we liked this hotel and we would recommend it for the pleasant staff. If you're coming in by train, it's walking distance, so there's no need for a cab or bus to get there. Nothing in Florence is all that far away (it was about an 8 minute leisurely walk from the hotel to the Uffizi).

“Nice Hotel”

Santa Maria Novella Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Chicago
Sep 24, 2008

Very nice hotel. Our room was beautiful and big. Great bathroom. Breakfast was really nice as well. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Fairly short walk from the train station. The city itself very walkable. The area the hotel is in is okay, not great, but a short walk and you're in the center of things. We would stay there again.

“A Fabulous Experience”

Santa Maria Novella Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Richmond, VA
Sep 14, 2008

This hotel is fabulous! It is decorated like a conservative 4 star hotel - think Ritz Carlton. The staff was also very helpful and accommodating.

In addition to the standard bedroom, there is also a walk-in closet (small, but sufficient to get your luggage out of sight), and an ample sitting room. The bathrooms are all marble and most of the rooms look out onto a courtyard. The breakfast is of the standard European fare, but it is fresh and filling. The dining areas are beautiful and will put you in mind of a Tea Room in older English Hotels.

The hotel is about two blocks from the train station, so it is easy to reach if you are traveling by train (don't bother with a taxi unless you have a lot of luggage). The train station is also the depot for tour buses and taxis - so it is easy to get around. It is also not far from the Duomo and in the same square as the Church of Santa Maria Novella - so you can walk to some of the historical sites easily.

The only bad thing about the hotel is that the rooms were not wired and there is a single computer for all of the guests. This was never an issue for us - but if you "need" to be connected - just be aware that you may have to wait a few moments.

All in all - I definitely recommend this hotel. It was definitely worth every penny (and actually on the inexpensive side considering the Euro v dollar). Safe travels.

btw - I chose to stay here based on the reviews on Traveladvisor.

    • Disliked — There was construction in the square in front of the hotel; so it was not very picturesque during our visit.

“Fantastic experience”

Santa Maria Novella Hotel

Sep 9, 2008

We stayed here during the first week in September and cannot wait to return! Our superior room with an unbelievable bathroom was the best I have stayed in anywhere in the world. Not cheap but if you pay peanuts you can get a monkey! Lovely breakfast in nice surroundings. We even enjoyed watching the workmen painstakeingly re-paving the piazza! Domestic staff were lovely.

“Good location, great price, excellent!”

Santa Maria Novella Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Orlando, Florida
Sep 5, 2008

This hotel is right across the street from the SMN train station in Florence. The rooms are beautiful and spacious with excellent air conditioning, which we appreciated immensely after returning from long days in the hot summer streets of Florence! The shower was wonderful with good water pressure and one of the few we found in Europe that had a full-sized shower curtain and not a half-wall. The breakfast room was beautiful with excellent coffee and a good selection of breakfast items. Many of the sights in Florence were within easy walking distance of this hotel. You can't beat the price either. The only downside during our visit in August of 2007 was the unsightly construction in the square and the scaffolding set up against the SMN church. That being said, it would not stop us in the least from staying there again, even if the construction were still ongoing. Good choice!
