We stayed at the Hotel Santa Maria Novella September 7 through September 9 2008.
What we liked:
ROOM SIZE: We were upgraded to a Junior Suite, that certainly helped. We could have hosted a dance in the room it was so large. We also had a very nice view of the Santa Maria Novella church--though there is construction in the piazza. However, because of the current construction there are also no cars which reduces the sound. The construction sound in the morning is minimal, but if you're a light sleeper it might wake you up.
BATHROOM: The bathroom was very nice. It was done entirely in marble and had a rain showerhead and an ample sink/counter area. A negative note though--the toilet seat didn't like to stay in place...that's all I'll say about that.
LOBBY: The lobby was nicely appointed and the front desk staff was very pleasant. There were a number of small sitting rooms throughout the ground floor of the hotel. Also, downstairs there is a computer with internet for Hotel guests.
What could have been better...
BREAKFAST: Their breakfast room is lovely, however, the breakfast service is understaffed and often ran out of eggs and other items. The servers are mostly pleasant, but they struggled to keep up with the crowd of people.
NOISE FROM PUB: On Sunday night (this was not the case on Monday, our second night) there was a lot of noise from the pub that is on the street. It was just under our window. It lasted until after midnight. It wasn't the worst thing in the world, but it took me a while to block it out and get to sleep.
CONSTRUCTION: This was far less of an issue than many reviews made it out to be; however, it's not the best view in the world. The construction also crowds the walking space around the hotel a bit. Overall, I felt this was minor, but it's worth mentioning. On a positive note though, it has halted traffic into the piazza which probably significantly reduced the noise. It also looks like they should be completing it sometime in the near future, so if you're planning your trip for spring 2009 or later it *should* be done (but then again, it's Italy).
ROOM DECOR: This is me getting a bit picky. While our Junior Suite was lovely and huge, it felt a bit bare. Not a lot of things on the walls and not a lot of furniture to fill up the space. Not a big deal as the room was quite nice, but just something to mention.
OVERALL...
Overall we liked this hotel and we would recommend it for the pleasant staff. If you're coming in by train, it's walking distance, so there's no need for a cab or bus to get there. Nothing in Florence is all that far away (it was about an 8 minute leisurely walk from the hotel to the Uffizi).
