We stayed at the Sunstar Park Davos for 4 nights, for the final part of our Glacier Express Rail Journey. We arrived at Davos station and the Hotel courtesy bus was there to meet us. We arrived at the same time as a huge German Coach party however we were checked in first by a very friendly receptionist. We were advised we had just booked a standard room but they had given us a free upgrade to a balcony room. This was most welcome as in our first Hotel the Derby, Grindelwald we had to pay for the upgrade.
The room was nice, kind of small but well furnished and equipped. Nice bathroom too. There was a large balcony with stunning views across the town and mountains. We were not overlooked in the room and the balcony was very private. There was a nice welcome pack of chocolates and the Sunstar Park also offers free mini bar. The minibar contained 2 bottles of beer, 2 bottles of coke, 2 orange juice, 2 water and two other cans soft drink. On the second day after the room had been cleaned we found the minibar had not been restocked with the 2 beers we had drank. We thought maybe you get the above allocation for the whole stay. We then found out from another guest that their minbar had been restocked. We asked at reception and they were very apologetic and a porter came up immediately with replacements. The next day the same thing happened again, the minibar was not restocked with the 2 drinks we had used. Again reception were quick to remedy the problem but I was slightly worried they may have thought we were trying to pull a fast one which we certainly were not.
I was rather disappointed when we first walked into the restaurant. It reminded me of something from the late 60s early 70s. The crockery was quite old and we found it astonishing that for a 4+ star hotel, some meals were being served on chipped crockery. Apart from that, the food was excellent with a good choice. Breakfasts were also superb with a huge variety of choice and some wonderful breads. Wine was reasonable (well resonable for Switzerland!) although we were never given a wine list. The restaurant was very busy as at the start of the season which is when we were there, most of the guests are German coach parties.
There is a wonderful large pool at the hotel which is free for guests however you have to pay for Sauna, steam room etc.
Davos has a fantastic "Davos Card" which they introduced this summer. You can travel in the Davos area (from Klosters to Monstein) on the trains, buses and cable cars absolutely free of charge. We couldn't believe this as in the other resorts, Zermatt and Grindelwald, we spent a fortune on travel, cable cars etc. There are also some wonderful walks around Davos area and we were blessed with fantastic weather.
In summary I would recommend the Sunstar Park and despite the minor gripes above I would certainly stay again at this hotel should I return to Davos.
