The Black Tulip has its own website with detailed photographs of each room, so you know what your supposed to be getting before you book.
Its very central and a good location to get around the city.
Being a gay traveller going to Amsterdam for the first time, I was looking forward to this trip. I think the whole plannet must know of the ways of the city with drugs, sex and canels. We checked in to firstly be given a mini lecture on the vices of Amsterdams drugs, and stories of people throwing themselves in to the canel and dying. Nice to hear after a long car drive when all you want to do is shower and relax. You then have to sign a disclaimer to use the room, hang on I booked a non-bondage room?
Now after all that, still tired, now a bit hacked off you get to the room. Looks ok..... settle in then notice actually the maintenance of the room is shabby.
The TV was held on the wall bracket by Duck Tape and cotton cord. The extractor fan in the window did not work, so there was no ventilation, coffee stains were on the hifi, the dado rail was hanging off, the paint in the bathroom was flaking off the walls, the tiles were cracked, the thermostat was loose, the shower didn't drain very well, couple of light bulbs didn't work, every floor board creaked, half the room had been touched up in silk paint over matt, and there was an odd picture hung on the wall half over the door frame covering up damage to the wall.
Finally there is a ladder on the wall leading to a big metal cage on top of the bathroom, not mentioned on the website.
Breakfast is one of those quiet affars where all the guests have just the one table, it was reasonable but you could not escape from particularly annoying people and eat by yourself if you wanted to.
Overall I've stayed in worse, but I didn't enjoy the stay and if I return to Amsterdam (since the lecture even put me off stepping out of the room), I'll choose another hotel.

we always hear : 'room 12 is such a beautiful, charming room'. (see for ex. review on Feb. 18, 2008)
But this diappointed guest is also right in his room-observations : some things can be improved...
***room 12 is our last room with a regular television, as in all other rooms it will very soon be replaced by a (big) LCD screen. (this explains the ductape, it's a temporary fix)
All other rooms have already LCD screens up to 37 "/92 cm. big.
***both fans in the room do work, maybe the plug was not in, but the guest never mentioned it during his stay.
***room 12 is also our last room to be re-painted soon, all other rooms have had a 'uplift' in the last 6 months. This room will be painted completely even this month (July).
***indeed some wooden original floor-boards creak, the building is 400 years old, I would creak being that old. Our 7 'leather' rooms upstairs have rubber floors, you won't hear a thing.
***the ladder is on our website-picture , the cage above the bath-room is not mentioned, it's a left-over from past history, it never bothered anyone before, it just makes people smile.
So far for the room, all observations accepted in gratitude.
For the other 'points' :
When (completely new) guests check into the hotel we always have a friendly talk , we offer a drink, give practical information about the hotel, showing guests the map of Amsterdam , giving some first touristic info. Included in this is indeed the phrase : 'it's Amsterdam, city of smart-, soft- and hard-drugs, be careful'. We mention this out of experience: we run an exciting hotel, we love it when guests have fun , but it has happened in the past that guests got over-excited because of drugs. (trust me it happens in all Amsterdam hotels, they just don't mention it)
Breakfast here is indeed a social experience on 1 big table, most of the time it's not quiet, guests from all over the world share experiences, it's fun and 99 % of our guests love it. We do have an occasional annoying breakfast-guest, but really not often :-)
The attached pictures are correct in showing the mentioned to be improved details, they don't show the beautiful exposed brick wall, the 1m./1m. original painting by Zeljko Premerl with flowers in an Amsterdam canal, with the St. Nicolas church on the back-ground. The 2 very comfortable seats, the canal-view, etc... (for other pictures as mentioned by the reviewer you can look on our website, after the refurbishment this month we'll place new ones)
Thank you,
