“Unexpectedly brilliant”

Hotel Danae

5 of 5 stars
NORTH YORKSHIRE
Jul 28, 2008

I have seen one or two 'not so glowing' reviews about this hotel so was slightly nervous about the experience. I had no need to worry, the room was - well a typical hotel room, small shower room/toilet which was adequate for the 3 of us. We were on the ground floor with a terrace outside, hop over the wall and you were poolside, as I had injured my ankle prior to this holiday it was ideal to have a ground floor room, it was kept very clean by the cleaning staff.
My husband had taught himself some greek and myself and our daughter learnt a few phrases which went down well with the hotel staff and they seemed to warm to us because we were making an effort, some of which have good command of english, some don't so a little understanding of greek and their culture will go along way. The staff daytime and evening were friendly and helpful and made our holiday special, we were really sad to leave and they all came to say goodbye to us.
So any Danae hotel staff who read this - I think you know who we are without putting our real names to this but when we flew from Athens two days ago we flew over Aegina (Egina) and could see the hotel - we are missing you already!! We will email you the photo's in the next few days. Yassou

“Did a hotel manager ever reduce you to tears?”

Hotel Danae

Me neither until I stayed at this hotel. In my 47 years, I've traveled abroad at least once a year for 40 of them: in the last 3 years I have been fortunate enough through work to visit 4 continents. So you could say I am an experienced traveler and well used to hotels. Not until I landed in to the Hotel Danae on Aegina, had I experienced any noteworthy difficulties in booking or staying in hotels - quite the opposite in fact.

I had booked and received confirmation for two double rooms with sea views for two nights at the end of a Greek islands holiday with my three older teenagers. On arrival we were given tiny connecting rooms with only one small shower room. I asked for us to be moved... and we were then given two ground floor rooms (one very sub-standard) right beside the pool at the far end of the hotel. When I produced the email confirmation of the booking the manager proceeded to shout (literally!) at me, accused me of harassing his staff and berated me for my supposedly offensive behaviour to the point that I burst in to tears. A first for me and an experience that I hope other travelers will not endure. So if you don't want to be verbally abused and feel threatened in a hotel lobby by an offensive and aggressive misogynist, stay away from this hotel! Needless to say , we did not stay a second night..

“Above and Beyond Expectation”

Before exclaiming, "I want to spend my Honeymoon at Danea," consider the level from which this review was written. I spent an unexpectedly enjoyable week at Danae, while attending an astronomy conference. So it was at work (6.5 hours+ of talks per day plus hours of kissing [--]), but I was getting reimbursed (and paid) to stay here. That said, I would take my girlfriend or family to Danae if I ever again visited Aegina without question (which I would). I returned from my trip less than a week ago, and I feel like I was on a vacation to an exotic island, despite being 10 miles as the crow flies from "Detroit with ruins," and surrounded by other insufferable nerd similar to myself. Seriously, this isn't where one would spend their romantic get-away of a lifetime, but Danea has that nearly ideal balance of the pristine lifestyle overlooking the ocean (or the Gulf of the Saronic Islands), while having nearby access to a vibrant and historic community. The staff was very helpful and I loved my room (although tell the staff to fix the remote in 102 because it only got like 9 channels with a kickass movie in English on one of them almost every night). Suffice to say I was over-whelmed by my experience and I miss it already (4 days later).

“Danae Hotel”

Hotel Danae

4 of 5 stars
athens
Mar 23, 2008

I ve been there during last days of October 2004 with a frind for a brief 4 - days vacations.

The hotel was about to close for the winter season, (as i understood), there were not many guests so it was very quite and the pool was availiable to us all day and night.

Reduced personnel but without problems. Clean enough with nice rooms. Great view from the first floor's rooms to the sea.

I dont agree that you can get to the hotel from the city just by walking. Its quite close to the city but not so close.

I m sure that during summer period is even more interesting.

I suggest it for brief excursions during autumn and spring and for long stays during summer.

“Good, comfortable stay a wee distance (@1km) from the port.”

Hotel Danae

Arriving late at night from Athens, my wife and I were met by smiles a clean room and a comfortable bed at a reasonable out of season rate. We even braved the autumnal chill and had a swim in the hotel pool. All in all, this is a good honest modern hotel without any WOW!!! factor.
