The Beatles stayed at this hotel in 1963, and in some instances, The Scandic Continental hasn't updated its decor since then. What updates have been made seem to have come from the clearance area at IKEA. All is not bad, however, and in some ways, this hotel is a good value.
This review regards the cabin accommodations, available for single travelers. Stockholm is one of the most expensive cities in the world, and when that is considered, a single cabin at the Scandic Continental might prove a good choice for the money.
The hotel has an amazingly convenient location--right across from Central Station, the T-Bahn subway, and the terminus for the airport bus and train. One of Sweden's most noteworthy department store is a block away, and the old town, Gamla Stan, is a ten minute walk. Besides, the hotel offers complimentary bike rental to guests, so getting around is quite easy--and this is a very bike friendly city.
A single room in a hostel in Stockholm can run $100 or more, so the $110 rate here, including breakfast, tax, wifi, and bike rental, is a bargain. (The hotel information notes a fitness center, but the facility is essentially some free weights and an exercise bike. Membership to a nearby gym is available for free--better, but still a bit lacking) Breakfast, while filling enough, is a bit depressing--served in a mess hall style setting, and stocked from a buffet.
The accommodations are among the smallest I've ever seen--but nicely proportioned and well thought out. The main part of the room measured 7 feet by 7 feet, enough for a single bed, cabinetry built in, a chair, and a mounted TV. Bed is comfortable and the duvet is plush. The cabin is lined in mirrors to make the space more palatable, and this works. There is no closet, and only minimal cabinet space under the bed. The bathroom is just big enough to function in, but the shower is robust. Soap and shower gel come out of dispensers that are wall mounted--no individual soap bars or bottles of shampoo here. Wake up calls come from your television set. The decor is that of a mothballed cruise ship--a bit dated, and more than a bit worn. All is clean though, but for a huge stain on my carpet.
The staff is friendly enough, and all speak excellent English.
I'd recommend the hotel to single travelers who want the facilities of a full service hotel at a more advantageous price. And for all, the location cannot be beat.
