Stayed in Cannes for Easter and went to Monte Carlo for the afternoon one of the days. Walked in through the door of the Casino just to have a look, didn't want to go any further. An officious young doorman spoke to us in English (I do speak a little French and had managed very well over the whole weekend) and asked me to hand in my bag to their left luggage area. I didn't want to do this as we were not going any further, but he started to insist, and then urge us out of the building. My French wasn't enough to deal with this, and as he had started to speak in English, I continued in English trying to explain that we just wanted to stand there a moment, and I tried to explain to him that his attitude was really unpleasant to a tourist. He then virtually shouted at me "In this country we speak French". I was horrified at this, and at that stage one of his colleagues came over and tried to calm him down. This was the only time in our whole lovely weekend that we met anyone who was less than friendly.
