“Clean rooms but rude staff”

Foley's Guesthouse

We stayed at Foley's for one night and had a bit of a bad experience in the restaurant. On arrival the staff were courteous and we were shown to a clean but small en-suite room which looked out on an industrial staircase and concrete roof. The room was travel lodge style in so far as having the trademark furniture, brown blankets on the bed and the traditional travel lodge bedspread - not much individual character or homeliness, but it wasn't too exopensive so I suppose you get what you pay for.
There were no tea and coffee making facilities even though the room info suggested there should be some - I asked at reception but the staff member just couldn't (or wouldn't) understand what I was talking about thinking I wanted hot water for a cup. So we gave up.
We were afraid that the room would be noisy but fortunately we heard no sound from the bar and restaurant but the radiator in the room never appeared to come on and it was so cold I had to sleep in walking socks and a jumper.
We decided to eat at the restaurant and I went up to the bar to enquire as to the process of ordering food. When I finally got someone's attention I asked do we order at the bar? At the table? Sit anywhere in particular etc. (I am always a very polite person.) The response I got was an exasperated "What?!" as if I was making no sense and the waiter/bar man proceeded to somehow misunderstand me telling me through gritted teeth, a raised tone and on the edge of his temper that he would be with me in 5 minutes - OK?!!!! As if I was being demanding or greatly inconveniencing him. When I tried to explain again, he continued to hiss instructions at me and I went to sit down as I was angrily told to do but was so shocked that I just had to leave. I just would not have enjoyed the meal.
In the morning the same waiter served us breakfast in a totally over the top , friendly manner - I was so uncomfortable I just couldn't wait to check out and go. Sadly it wasn't the holiday experience I had hoped for and I felt very deflated and sad about it.

“Affordable, fun and in the middle of town”

What a great place. It's a quality, clean B&B and a fun pub & resxtaurant. Food was good pub food. Nothing fantastic but consistently good. There was no noise from the bar that kept us awake and the breakfast was fresh and filling. The staff was kind and helpful.

What is best is it's location. You are right by the shops, restaurants and other pubs so it was easy to drop off packages and then continue to shop. Easy access to the ROK and national forrest. Kenmare is really a beautiful village. If you plan to stay, try to be there a couple days. You'll really want to soak up the town.

As I mentioned in my other reviews...I tend to give most of the nice places a 4 rating and hold back on the 5s for the truly exceptional. This was an above average place to stay and I would readily recommend it to anyone...especially for the price.

“Exactly what we wanted”

Stayed in Foleys for the weekend with a gang of girls and it was exactly what we were looking for. Very central location, cheap and clean. Had lunch here, wide selection of food with prompt service. My tuna melt was mediocre, what the others had was fine though. Breakfast was fine also, nothing too spectacular, but freshly cooked and hot. The rooms were not huge, but big enough and were very clean. The walls are a bit thin so it was loud when people were coming home from the pub, but we were coming home at that time too, so it didn’t bother us.

There was one extremely unfriendly barman, tall, dark haired, couldn't place his accent. He was consistently rude to our entire group and didn't fit in with the Irish staff. Everyone else was extremely friendly and a proper example of traditional Irish hospitality.

“would def. go back to Foley's”

My husband and I stumbled along Foley's after being told by the local tourist office that we would have to stay a good walk out of the town. Foley's is right in the middle of the town and is a lovely bar/restaurant/b and b
Our room was the nicest we stayed in on the whole tour of Kerry and Cork. Our room looked on the main street with beautiful window boxes. The room was clean and decorated tastefully.
We ended up in Foley's bar at the end of the night - also entertained by live music. Great atmosphere. Once we had enjoyed a few pints, we were able to creep upstairs to our room for a most comfortable nights rest.
Full Irish breakfast was served the next morning in the restaurant area. Staff very friendly. Make this a stop on your trip!
