We stayed for 2 weeks this June at the Limonaia and have to say the views are absolutely stunning. I was worried before going after reading the reviews but our room was very clean but basic and the bathroom was bigger than anticipated. The views all round the lake from our balcony were beautiful. This is the big plus off the hotel and its situation. Some of the rooms look very "rustic". It is a steep climb down to the town and no lift up to rooms above the restaurant, which is most of the rooms. No good for people with walking difficulties. We tended to walk down to the town and catch the hotel mini bus back when it was very hot.
Towels are still large tea towels but they were changed every day.
The hotel is very popular with the Germans and the English were very outnumbered. Even the Italian waiters spoke to us in German. If you are looking for an Italian experience you may be better staying at the Southern end of the lake.
The area round the swimming pool is fairly small and no where near enough sun beds for the number of guests when the hotel is full, which it was while we were there. The indoor pool was a disappointment. Situated at the side of the bar/pizzeria, there are no sun chairs to use by the pool and people were discouraged from sitting around at the tables in swim wear so when the weather was bad the indoor pool wasn't really an option.
The first week was rain and cloud for all but 3 half days. The second week the temperatures were in the 80s and 90s so be prepared for all weathers. Glad we took rainwear and something warm to wear because it was very cold (50s part of the first week). No heating was put on the hotel and the second week the hotel would not put on the air conditioning and bedrooms were stifling at night.
We were disappointed with the entertainment. Entertainment was advertised before we went but the only entertainment while we were there was a singer once or twice a week but we only found out if we happened to be in the bar at the right time. Otherwise there were 2 TVs in the bar, one blaring out in Italian the other in German, in competition with each other. There are TVs in the bedrooms but the only English speaking channel was CNN news. If you are looking for entertainment in the evenings this isn't the hotel to choose, particularly as it's a difficult climb down to the town and the last mini bus to the hotel returns at 9.10pm so it means a taxi back if you want to be later.
Food was plentiful but very monotonous. Lots of salads at dinner but only usually one choice of meat or fish for hot food. Breakfast was very repetitive.
The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful.
Limone is a small place so we travelled around a lot while we were there.
We felt it was value for money but recommend a four star hotel if you want more luxurious surroundings and variety of food.
