I recently stayed at the Ibis Melbourne for three nights. The location of the hotel is just one block from the Victoria Market and a short 10 minute walk down Swanston Street to the CBD. Various trams run on Swanston and Elizabeth Streets (within one block of hotel) as well as on LaTrobe Street three blocks from hotel. The Circle Tram runs on LaTrobe Street.
Check-in was handled quickly and efficiently by the friendly and helpful assistant manager who advised me my $96 per night "single" room had been upgraded to a "suite" on the top floor (level 11) because the hotel was full.
The bedroom was of average size with a double bed and was connected to a small kitchen (which included a mini-refrigerator, microwave, dishes and utensils) and a sitting room. The furniture was definitely dated and the carpets were old and had a few dark stains. However, the room was clean as was the bathroom. Other than the furnishings that needed replacement, the tile and moldings around the bathtub needed a good cleaning as there were splotches of mildrew around the tub. The towels were worn and needed replacement but they were clean, as were the bedsheets.
The hotel offers guest laundry machines on several of the floors of the hotel; A$4 to wash and A$3 to dry. Detergent can be purchased at the front desk. The hotel has two Internet accessible terminals in the lobby at a cost of A$2 per 20 minutes.
In the basement there is a restaurant offering buffet service for breakfast and dinner (maybe lunch as well) and also a bar. I did not eat at the restaurant but the buffet looked fairly extensive. There are many cafes within walking distance of the hotel and the Victoria Market is just one block away which offers a variety of food choices. There is an ATM machine just around the corner on Elizabeth Street.
Overall the hotel was satisfactory. The room was clean and comfortable, but dated. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
