My sister and I shared a 2-bedroom apartment, which was on the 3rd floor of a 7-storey (more or less) building right in the Melbourne CBD. It was one block away from Swanston St, therefore trams, Myers, David Jones, restaurants, so very, very handy. The bedroom windows were double glazed so good for dulling any evening noise. A couple of nights I barely heard the thud of bass from night club music. It didn't worry me as it was so faint.
Our apartment was great - self contained, light and roomy, although it smelled a bit smokey. They have a non-smoking policy and a $200 fine if one smokes in the apartment, so we were probably unlucky. The bedrooms were a nice size, one with a queen bed and the other with a super king which could be made into 2 large singles. The bathroom was big with a shower over a huge spa bath, washing machine/dryer in one, and toilet, and a separate toilet next door.
The balcony was so narrow you would hardly stand on it, but it was nice to be able to open the lounge door to the outside. It was a bit noisy with traffic, but good to have a nosey at the street below. Our lounge opened onto Bourke St, and we had all day sun, not that we were there all day, but it was nice to come home to a nice warm room. There is a heat pump/ air conditioner.
Our friends had the 1-brm apartment next door. The usual configuration is a queen bed, but they asked for 2 twin beds, which they were given, but the room was a little small for the two beds, so the bedroom door couldn't be shut. Also, hope you don't get claustraphobic as the bedroom was on the inside, so no window. The rest of the unit was great though, and they had a bigger lounge than our lounge.
They have a gym which we used a few times, which was great. No airconditioning in the gym, but it served its purpose.
We paid AUD245 per night for 7 nights. It was a bit pricey, but we were in Melbourne on conference, so after a hard day at the office it was nice to come back to pleasant surroundings. We had a dining room table that seated 6, plus there was a work station, so plenty of room for the lap top and for the neighbours to share dinner. We ordered in twice and enjoyed both takeaways.
The neighbours paid AUD185 per night for their Twin configuration. They also had kitchen facilities and a large bathroom, with spa bath, etc.
Someone we know stayed at the conference hotel (3-star), which was reported to be awful, not clean, etc.
All in all it was a pleasant stay. One minor glitch that was disappointing and that I didn't report, was that my tiny teddy bear went missing. I'd only had it for a week, received in response to a donation I made, so not of sentimental value. I trust it's gone to a needy recipient. No trouble with any other items though.
All in all, I was pleased with everything, so would stay there again, and recommend to others.
