My husband and I just returned from a four night stay at this hotel.
From reading previous reviews, it seems that you have one of two experiences while staying at the hotel, which means that you either stay in the Regency (older) wing, or the Residence (newer) wing. We had read reviews on Tripadvisor about this hotel, and opted to reserve a room in the newer wing. We also paid more to do so. All in all, our room was very lovely. We were located on a high floor (which overlooked the docks), but we enjoyed the lights and view from our balcony.
The only problem occured at check in. We had booked a room to include the "City Indulgence" package, and upon checking into the hotel, this was not indicated on our reservation. The clerk tried register us into the hotel without this package, however, I had a copy of all paper work in hand, and the situation was corrected. This package included the buffet breakfast daily, which was a very good deal, as meals are generally very expensive in Auckland. The "fruit amenity" which was part of our package, never appeared! The package also allowed for free internet connection in the room, however, we did not travel with a lap top. We used the business center at the hotel to access the computer, and were charged $15.00 per hour. Given that cost, you are much better off using an internet cafe in the area.
The exercise room and pool at the hotel are superb! It is clean, well maintained, and anyone who says differently is being unreasonable.
Yes - the cost by taxi from the airport is very expensive. I had e-mailed the hotel prior to arriving there and was advised to use the "super shuttle". This was a good deal, as it reduced the cost by more than half. The shuttle does make a fews stops however, so allow yourself enough time to get to and from the airport. For me, the cost saved was well worth it.
On the day we checked out, we were taking a late flight home to LAX. We checked out of our room, placed our bags in the lobby under the watch of the concierge, and spent the afternoon by the pool. The facilities there included the use of showers, hairdryers, toiletries, as well as lockers. This made our last day very pleasant - at least we didn't have to sit at an airport waiting hours for our flight!
The Hyatt sits about a mile or less from the hustle and bustle of the harbor. We liked the quieter environment, although reviewers have complained about "the walk up the hill" to get back to the hotel! They are right! Auckland is a very hilly city, and although we are used to walking, the climb was difficult. On our last day there, we found a trick - take the free city bus (which you pick up on Queen Street near the Quay), and take it to the University Station. From there, it is about two easy walking blocks to the hotel, and it will take you alongside of Albert Park. If you have the energy, take time to walk (climb, actually) into this little oasis.
Auckland is a lovely city - enjoy!!!!!!!!!
