“$17 for a litre of Milk! Over-rated Hotel”

Hyatt Regency Auckland

Dont trust the star rating, while the staff are great, the hotel rooms are old, in need of an update and just dont work well from a layout perspective. Hyatt is a big brand, but this hotel is a big let down. Old electrics, rock hard bed that is like concrete and massively expensive for simple things. I asked for some 'low fat milk' and was chanrged $17! amazing, they must have a special cow that they milk in order to justify that sort of expense. Go elsewhere.

“Tired; needs a makeover”

Hyatt Regency Auckland

Apr 16, 2008

My wife & I recently stayed at the Hyatt in Auckland just prior to a cruise. The hotel was average at best, and not what I would have expected from Hyatt. The room was small & dark, & the temperature was hard to regulate.

Location is close to University of Auckland & Albert Park.

“Beds comfortable, Hotel tatty”

Hyatt Regency Auckland

2 of 5 stars
Southampton
Apr 12, 2008

My wife and I stayed at this hotel in the old building on 2 and 3 April 2008 in a group of 16 people with 8 rooms between us. Apparently no one in the group were satisfied with their room. All the rooms and common areas were all in need of refurbishment. Our room had dirty curtains with holes, and the duvets had no covers, however the beds were comfortable. The en-suite walls, shower curtain and grouting were dirty, and their was no plug in the hand basin. The toilet seat was also damaged. All in all it was not what any of us were expecting from a Hyatt hotel, and we would certainly not stay there again!

“False Impression”

Hyatt Regency Auckland

3 of 5 stars
East Midlands
Apr 11, 2008

For our first trip to NZ we wanted to ensure we booked a good quality hotel. On arrival the lobby, bar and resturant looked clean, modern and bright. We were delighted. However when we got to our room (a Regency Room) we were very surprised at: 1. the decor - had seen better days and did not reflect the decor in the lobby. Furniture was wooden with knobs missing, didn't close properly and the top of the TV cabinet was covered in a layer of dust (found this out when I picked up my shawl placed there by my husband). 2. the size of the bathroom - not room to swing a cat as they say, two glass shelves, top one so filthy I could not put anything on it.
That aside the staff were really friendly and helpful and the food in the resturant was great.
If you are visiting NZ for the first time I would miss out Auckland. We went there from Sydney and Auckland is dirty and dead in comparison. We arrived over Easter and virtually everythng except the souvenir shops were shut. It was like going to London and finding it closed!! It was so dissapointing as in Sydney they were setting up music festivals and outdoor events for the Easter weekend as we were leaving.

“had an enjoyable stay!”

My husband and I just returned from a four night stay at this hotel.

From reading previous reviews, it seems that you have one of two experiences while staying at the hotel, which means that you either stay in the Regency (older) wing, or the Residence (newer) wing. We had read reviews on Tripadvisor about this hotel, and opted to reserve a room in the newer wing. We also paid more to do so. All in all, our room was very lovely. We were located on a high floor (which overlooked the docks), but we enjoyed the lights and view from our balcony.
The only problem occured at check in. We had booked a room to include the "City Indulgence" package, and upon checking into the hotel, this was not indicated on our reservation. The clerk tried register us into the hotel without this package, however, I had a copy of all paper work in hand, and the situation was corrected. This package included the buffet breakfast daily, which was a very good deal, as meals are generally very expensive in Auckland. The "fruit amenity" which was part of our package, never appeared! The package also allowed for free internet connection in the room, however, we did not travel with a lap top. We used the business center at the hotel to access the computer, and were charged $15.00 per hour. Given that cost, you are much better off using an internet cafe in the area.

The exercise room and pool at the hotel are superb! It is clean, well maintained, and anyone who says differently is being unreasonable.

Yes - the cost by taxi from the airport is very expensive. I had e-mailed the hotel prior to arriving there and was advised to use the "super shuttle". This was a good deal, as it reduced the cost by more than half. The shuttle does make a fews stops however, so allow yourself enough time to get to and from the airport. For me, the cost saved was well worth it.

On the day we checked out, we were taking a late flight home to LAX. We checked out of our room, placed our bags in the lobby under the watch of the concierge, and spent the afternoon by the pool. The facilities there included the use of showers, hairdryers, toiletries, as well as lockers. This made our last day very pleasant - at least we didn't have to sit at an airport waiting hours for our flight!

The Hyatt sits about a mile or less from the hustle and bustle of the harbor. We liked the quieter environment, although reviewers have complained about "the walk up the hill" to get back to the hotel! They are right! Auckland is a very hilly city, and although we are used to walking, the climb was difficult. On our last day there, we found a trick - take the free city bus (which you pick up on Queen Street near the Quay), and take it to the University Station. From there, it is about two easy walking blocks to the hotel, and it will take you alongside of Albert Park. If you have the energy, take time to walk (climb, actually) into this little oasis.

Auckland is a lovely city - enjoy!!!!!!!!!
