“Good stuff at Mercure”

Mercure Budapest City Center

4 of 5 stars
Birmingham, UK
Oct 15, 2007

Just returned from a weekend in Budapest, where I booked the Mercure City after much research. As I was arranging a stag weekend, I wanted somewhere central, of a decent standard and not too expensive - and this fitted the bill perfectly.
The staff were very welcoming and helped (or perhaps put up with all over requests). Checking in 19 slightly merry men is never an easy feat, but they were great.
I didn't experience any of the dirty rooms that some of the other reviewers have mentioned, and I visited about 10 different rooms during my stay.
One last thing, don't let the fact that were in a stag party put you off. This is not a common hotel for stag parties and don't really imagine that will change. I am planning to return to Budapest with my girlfriend and would not hesitate to book the Mercure City again.

“Central, but dirty and uncomfortable”

The hotel is an a communist area building of very strange design. It's been made to look funky with the addition of colour, but it does not work. My room was quite dirty - hair in the bed, mold in the shower - and tiny. The breakfast is plentyful, but they charge plenty for it, too. Check-in and other services take time; there are not enough staff to process the large travel groups that pass through the hotel. The location is central, but not brilliant. It is on Vaci Utca, which is the overpriced, glossed-up tourist mile. There are other, better hotels in Budapest for a more comfortable stay at similar prices.

“very dirty rooms”

Mercure Budapest City Center

Pluses: hotel has a great location and friendly front desk
minuses: room was dirty and TINY. Bathroom was the smallest I've ever seen in a hotel. The shower section is soooo small that if you drop the soap you don't have space to bend down and pick it up.... But the worse was the dirty bed. The top blanket had an old blood stain on it and for 3 days we were requesting it to be changed with no success....We would throw it on the floor and the smart housekeeper would put it back on the bed ! My advice is to avoid this hotel at any cost. The next 3 days we stayed at Best Western in the Buda side and it was a great hotel: very clean and much bigger room and bathroom. I am not so fond of americans but when it comes to hotels they beat europeans hands down.

FYI: Budapest was tooo expensive and nothing interesting to see other than the Danub river and Vacci street. A two-day stay there is more than enough. After travelling to a few eastern european countries, I came to the conclusion that a stay in an eastern european country costs as much as a western european country like France or italy, but you get worse service, worse food, and most importantly, much much less interesting sites to see and things to do. I am sticking with trips to western europe from now on...

My husband and I stayed here for our first night in Budapest and had no problems at all! The location is fantastic - everything is within walking distance. The staff are very polite and helpful. Althought it's not the fanciest hotel in the world, It worked for our stay! No problem-o! I would stay here again.

“Perfect for the single traveller”

Locals still refer to this hotel as La Taverna. I stayed there for one night in Budapest prior to my return back home. I really enjoyed my short stay and would recommend this hotel to anyone, especially if you can get a good deal on the room rate (I paid approx $65 CAD). All the staff members were incredibly nice. I arrived at 7 am from Romania, very tired and yearning for a nice hot shower. They did offer me a room at that time but I declined because it was a smoking room. Fortunately, I soon found myself happily wandering around the area, re-energized by the sights of this incredibly beautiful city. I bought some fresh fruit and pastries and an espresso and enjoyed a lovely breakfast in a nearby park.

It's definitely a good idea to call ahead of time to confirm your reservation details. I booked my reservation online but I followed the advice on a previous review on TripAdvisor and called the hotel the week prior to my stay to re-confirm room specifications. While there was no problem with the reservation itself, the staff did not seem to have any details of my online request for a non-smoking room, nor the fact that it was to be a Queen bed rather than 2 singles. When I checked in, I did receive a non-smoking room, albeit with 2 single beds, but that was ok since I was travelling alone.

The room was clean and comfortable, with a TV and a great shower!!! I slept like a baby (still some renos but I didn't hear any noise). Note that there is no clock radio and they do charge for wake-up calls. No view but who wants to be inside when you're situated right on a fun pedestrian mall and only a couple of minutes walking distance to the Danube? Take advantage of this fantastic location! Especially nice for a single traveller.
