“Saved by the Phoenix Park Hotel”

Phoenix Park Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Netherlands
Jun 9, 2008

The Phoenix Park hotel is the best hotel experience I had in my life. I stayed there in 2003 and I always wanted to say 'Thanks!' to the people who work there. Since I learned about Tripadvisor I finally can.
In 2003 my husband and I were travelling through Amerika by train. Young as we were, we were on a very tight budget for four weeks. We mostly stayed in hostels and inn's. Washington was sort of our last stop. When we arrived there early in the morning, at the Amtrak station, we toke our Lonely Planet, as we did so many times before, only to learn that all budget options in Washington were full. There was simply no place for us to go!

Haven't slept for more than two nights (the train stops in Charleston and Savannah in the middle of the night) we were broken, exhausted and therefore we panicked. What to do?
The Phoenix Park Hotel advertised with an Amtrakrate. So we called (though the hotel seemed far to expensive for us) and we spoke a lovely lady who offered a room for 80 dollars a night.
We were shocked to hear the rate of the room. I know you must laugh when I say this, but 80 dollars was way, way above our budget. After thinking about it like an hour or so, we decided to go for it and check in.

So we arrived there, all sweat and dust, with backpacks on our backs, tired, to get another little shock: the 20 dollar tax on our room, which made it a 100 dollars a night (in Europe all taxes are always included in everything, so without being naive sometimes you have to remind yourselve that in Amerika it's not). I'm afraid I reacted just a litlle grumpy over that, for which a want to apologise: I can only say we were worn out and could't think straight anymore. But the lady was lovely and patient with us. And then the friendly doorman toke us immediately to our room (at 9 or so in the morning).

It toke us a good mornings sleep, to finally realise how lucky we were! To get to stay in this incredible hotel. (much later we learned about the actual price for a room). To be able to check in way before check-in time. To sleep in such a comfortable bed, which was opened every night we came back to our room. The fine bathroom with the luxurious amount of toiletries (rosemary, as I remember). The excellent location of the hotel (right across the Amtrakstation and very close to the Mall) and the cheerfull Irish pub downstairs.

I know now what Irish hospitality means: The Phoenix Park Hotel made us feel welkom and our stay in Washington unforgettable and I will recommend this hotel to anyone who ever goes there.
In a few weeks we go back to the USA. Unfortunately Washington is not on our list this time. But we'll come back. We've always wanted to return someday to the Phoenix Park. Next time we'll save up for it ;-)

“All Around Great Stay!!”

Phoenix Park Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Tampa, Florida
May 15, 2008

We had a fabulous stay at the Pheonix Park Hotel. It could not have been more convenient, with quick access to the Metro and very close to the capital building and monuments. The staff was very pleasent and helpful in making suggestions and travel arrangements. I cannot say enough about how comfortable the beds in the room were, I didn't want to wake up!! The restaraunt/bar (The Dubliner) was perfect for breakfast and a late night drink. I would go back in a second!!

    • Liked — The beds were amazingly comfortable and the location was perfect!!
    • Disliked — Actually everything was great...I guess the air conditioner could have been more powerful and the windows a bit more soundproof

“Liked The Phoenix Park”

Phoenix Park Hotel

My boyfriend and I spent three nights at this hotel in April. It is a very conveniently located hotel, literally a block from Union Station and The Capitol. It is a very charming, Irish themed hotel with a pub and outdoor patio area for dining. The staff at the front desk was always ready to help us if we had a problem. Our room was small, but very clean and, as others have mentioned, the beds are heavenly. Housekeeping did an excellent job of keeping our room nice and clean. Plenty of towels were provided in the bathroom as well (always a plus). Our only complaint about this hotel was how noisy our room was. We didn't really discover just how noisy until the first night we tried to get to sleep. Our room was located on the third floor, facing the front of the hotel. It literally felt as though we had our windows wide open, the noise was that bad. We contemplated switching rooms the following day to a higher floor but at that point we had unpacked and were out sight seeing most of the time anyway. I'm not sure if it's because the windows are older and not more sound proof, but the noise did put a damper on our overall impression of this hotel. We chose this hotel through an AMTRAK package we purchased. I would be happy to stay at this hotel on a future visit to D.C., but would insist on a room higher up and not facing the main thoroughfare.

Thank you so much for your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed your accommodations and were pleased with the service we provided.
We understand your concern about the noise. Because we are located near several landmarks in the city, we are in a busy area. Some of the rooms face street traffic while others do not. Our quieter rooms can be requested at the time of booking so do not hesitate to place the request for your next stay.
To address this concern more permanently, we have scheduled the windows in those rooms facing traffic to be replaced this summer. They will feature double panes to provide better insulation from noise and also save energy. All the windows in the sleeping rooms are planned to be replaced by next year.
Thank you again for your comments. We welcome any additional feedback you may have.

“Most amazing beds!!!”

Phoenix Park Hotel

Apr 21, 2008

We stayed at this hotel for four nights during the Cherry Blossom Festival. It's conveniently located just a block from Union Station which is essential for exploring the city. The staff was incredibly helpful. They even helped avoid disaster when ticketmaster wasn't able to print our tickets to an event. Every room has great wireless and fast internet connections. But by far, the best part of the whole stay was the ultra, ultra comfortable beds! We slept like babies the entire time. A couple of the staff members confessed to us that they bought replica beds right down to the linens for their own homes. Maybe we'll do the same!!
