“It was "Grand"”

Grand China Princess

Aug 4, 2008

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying a week recently and just love this hotel. We had stayed there four years ago, and find it is just the sort of hotel for us. Friendly and very reasonably priced.

It has lovely views over the city but being in Chinatown it is away from the main but is easily accessible by the cheap taxis. Also a walk in any direction is an experience in itself.

There is a lovely coffee shop on the ground floor which does some great refreshing juice drinks and quick meals. On the top floor is a revolving restaurant which takes about 2 hours to go right around and is very reasonably priced.

The staff are helpful and nothing is ever a trouble.

Our only complaint is that we don't like the company used by the tour desk. We didn't last time and fortunately found far better companies to use in Bangkok and may we suggest, even then pay the little extra for private tours rather being jam packed into a bus and ending up in a gem factory. We used the hotel's again twice, and regretted it both times.

We used Open World Travel to see the Tiger Temple at the River Kwai and later Thai Tours and they were both excellent.

Enjoy your trip!

For a basic hotel this property is grand.
The rooms are simple and the bathrooms a bit dated, but the rooms are clean and beds are comfortable.
The location is close to a few attractions eg the night markets, the dome.

“Comfort in Bangkok”

Location and Access: This 25 storey modern hotel is located in the Chinatown area of Bangkok. Between 45 and 60 minutes drive from the airport. The going rate for metered taxis to get anywhere in Bangkok seemed to be between 100 and 200 baht. During the day (up until 9:00 pm) this part of Bangkok is alive with street markets and shops (including a Tesco (Lotus)!) There are not many attractions at night. Personally I found navigating Bangkok really difficult – taxis were the best way to get to the major visitor attractions such as the Grand Palace. Reception: Guests are warmly welcomed in the spacious modern reception area. This is well maintained and gives every impression of being the four star hotel this is supposed to be. In this area there is a cocktail bar, coffee shop and a few retail units. Staff are very friendly and some speak fluent English. Facilities: On site tour agency and souvenir shop, Fitness Centre and Sky Pool. The hotel has six very efficient lifts but the Sky Pool can only be reached by a flight of steps. The pool is disappointingly small and awkward to get in and out. There is a small seating area with about 6 sun loungers. However, the views from here over the city and the Chao Phaya River are remarkable. Restaurants: There are 2 a revolving one on the 25th floor boasting panoramic views which I did not use as visibility was not good due to weather and pollution. The other located nearer to the ground where breakfast is served. This is buffet style with eggs cooked to order; the fare on offer caters for every taste and is plentiful and good quality. Better than I have experienced in many other hotels. The service cannot be faulted. Room: Mine was on the 17th Floor and was one of the largest I have ever occupied. Lots of space with large windows. The hotel blurb boasts that rooms have views of the city and river. I could not see the river from my room but only the huge concrete hotel air conditioning system and the urban sprawl of Bangkok. The vital air conditioning unit did its job and kept the room so cold that due to the high heat the windows (hot to the touch) steamed up on the outside! A sizeable walk in closet also contained a mini safe – which after reporting it not working was repaired within minutes of contacting reception. Lighting was reasonable, comfortable king-size bed, armchair, TV (with some English language stations) tea and coffee making and mini bar/fridge (2 complimentary bottles of drinking water per day). Décor –minimal. Bathroom – Decoratively had seen better days but functioned adequately. The hotel corridors have no carpet but ceramic tiled floors. Guests returning in the late evening or departing early morning can create a disturbing noise. Room Service: I had dinner in my room for the 2 nights of my stay and the speed of service and the quality and quantity of the food was excellent and reasonably priced compared to room service in European hotels. The fresh fruit platter beautifully carved and refreshingly delicious 90 baht. Green Issues: Electricity activated by room key, water conservation, recycling). Summary: In a fairly good location for visiting the attractions in Bangkok. The hotel is well maintained and provided excellent service and quality at a reasonable place. A safe choice for travellers like me who want a little comfort!

Yes, the hotel is in the middle of chinatown and this is bangkok chinatown so expect double the noise, colour, flavour of anywhere else in bangkok. If you don't like people wherever you go, bustling activity at all times and strange sights and smells - then do yourself a favour and don't go to chinatown - infact don't go to bangkok. Stay in a farm. Milk a cow.

If you want the craziness that is bangkok to hit you in the face as soon as you step outside your hotel with dated but spacious rooms, generously extensive and ever changing buffet breakfast, friendly and polite staff, then this is it.

Walk through the never ending markets with wholesale prices cheaper than chutuchuk, makeshift stalls selling trinkets and porn, see what the locals are buying, pull up a chair alongside a street stall and dare to sample the weird and wonderful concoctions, see what the locals are eating, take pics of the amazingly dilapidated architecture and buildings, take a walk to the river pier and take a boat to the city centre etc.

After a long day outside, you can have a relaxing swim on the rooftop pool, although small does the job in getting you wind down for the day. There's even an indoor jacuzzi on another level again although small does the job.

We booked the hotel with our eyes wide open that we want to see the real Bangkok but with a comfortable room to retreat to at night and we got exactly that and we loved it!

“Items Went Missing, Not Recommended”

Grand China Princess

Recently had a night at the Grand China Princess which ended in a bad experience when perfumes and cosmetics that were left in the bathroom disappeared. The management spoke with the housekeeping staff and failed to recover the items. There appears to be insufficient security for guests and a poor work ethic of the staff employed at the hotel.
The rooms are tired and bathrooms in a poor condition. The best feature is the view from the rooms.
The location is not very good and I would recommend that you look for a hotel closer to the sky train.
I cannot recommend this hotel because of the loss of personal items and would definitely not return to this hotel.
