“Rusty bathwater”

Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers

It was our first time in Bangkok. We decided to stay in the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel along the Chao Phraya River. We stayed for 3 days. We took a taxi straight from the airport. It took about 35 mins to get to the hotel & we paid the taxi driver 400 Baht.
Upon arriving at the hotel, our room was double booked so they upgraded us. Our room was on the way end of the hall. It had a good view but it faced straight towards the other side of the river. A view showing the river extending or at an angle out slightly would have been better. The room was nice and clean. It had a nice working station. The bed was nice and comfortable. Welcoming us was a nice selection of native fresh fruits and a white chocolate elephant with a tiny gold diamond shape on it's forehead (it was yummy).
Our daliy ride to the nearest MTR is a cozy little tug boat. It's a free service the hotel gives. It arrives every 15 mins--- sharp. The service waits for 5 mins for passengers and it t takes exactly 10 mins to get to the dock nearest the MTR entrance which is less than 2 minutes away. The last boat ride from the dock to the hotel is at 10:30pm.
The bathrooms appeared clean but on our second night, I was taking a bath and all of a sudden the water started to turn a rusty brown color. Gross! I then turned on the shower to try to rinse off. The water was still dirty. I was disgusted! I was wondering if the sewage line got mixed up with the clean water line. I hopped out of the tub and complained to housekeeping. They passed my complaint on to the plumbing department. I left the water running and when the plummers arrived, the water didn't come out rusty anymore. They just said there was a broken pipe so it happens sometimes and left. I wanted to protest and talk to the hotel manager but I was so tired form my long day of walking. We were leaving the next day and the water ran clean again so I didn't mind staying for the night. But it was a disgusting experience. I shampooed and soaped thrice!
When we checked out the front desk even got our bill wrong. Luckily, my husband noticed it and they fixed the problem.
In conclusion, the room and the boat service was good but the hotel service and plumbing sucks.

Greetings from the banks of the Chao Praya and thank you very much for staying with us and outline your experiences. Your opinion and observations are important to us because our goal is to provide our guests with excellent service and facilities.

We are sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience with rusty bath water. During this period, the hotel carried out important maintenance work which required the temporary disconnection of the water. After these repairs, generally some pipe residues may still be present and the taps need to be run for a couple of times to clear the residues. Nevertheless, this matter has been brought up to the attention of our department heads concerned to thoroughly check the rooms prior to guests arrival. I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for taking your personal time and trouble to inform us about your experience. It is only by these comments that we are able to constantly improve our services and standards.

We are also delighted to learn that you have enjoyed the facilities and the location of the hotel and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back.

Thank you,
The Hotel Management

“Not a great hotel”

Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers

Aug 9, 2008

My wife and I stayed at the Sheraton Orchid at the end of our honeymoon and were really disappointed with the accommodation and some of the service.

It was possibly unfortunate that we came straight to the Sheraton after staying at a secluded, small 4* hotel on Koh Samui that was more like a 5* hotel with attentive and individual service.

The staff at the main desk in the Sheraton were very efficient, helpful and friendly but we found the staff in the rest of the hotel didn’t want to be helpful, least of all friendly. With hugely inflated prices throughout the hotel, helpful and friendly service would have made them easier to pay.

While we were waiting to check in our travel agent’s representative, who met us at the airport, mentioned that she was surprised we were booked in to the Sheraton as the rooms do not live up to the website pictures or expectations.

When we were shown to our room there was no electricity on our wing of the hotel. The room looked tired and out-dated and after looking around (and finding a lot of dust) we asked to change rooms. The front desk staff were, again, really helpful and moved us immediately. Our new room was tired, out-dated and dusty. So two rooms, on entirely different floors, hadn’t been cleaned properly and were out-dated and horribly decorated.

The only thing going for the rooms was the view - which was fantastic, as was the riverside setting (although many other riverside hotels are available). I also did not like the hotel’s location – not close enough to Bangkok’s tourist sites or decent eating options.

We wouldn’t return to this hotel and, sadly, wouldn’t recommend it to anyone unless you’re happy to pay for a room with a view and nothing else.

“Fantastic hotel”

Ok, so my wife and I splurged and used points to upgrade to an executive level floor - giving us access to the lounge and free breakfast buffets. It was definitely worth it.

I've stayed in Sheraton's all over, and the service in this hotel just blew me away. The staff at the front desk is patient, polite, and helpful. The concierge was always there to help with directions, offering suggestions and helping with transfers (right, I know, it's their job).

I've never seen such great service in a club lounge. The staff up there on the 27th floor are outstanding...and between the breakfast, the afternoon tea, and the happy hour, you could almost eat at the hotel all day. (but yeah, there's some great local cuisine out there that you have to try).

The breakfast spread is impressive. I've been to a few hotels in Asia and the buffet at the Royal Orchid was one of the best I've seen. It was a bit more crowded than I expected, but the food was tasty and fresh (actually, with so many people eating there the food turns over pretty quickly).

The room was also fantastic. It certainly wasn't large, but efficient (safe tucked away in a drawer, modern style bathroom design also helped save space). We had a great view of the river, so definitely request that if you can (though I think all of the rooms have a pretty similar view).

We'll definitely come back and stay here ... and spend the extra $$/points to have access to the executive floor.

“Great meeting venue”

Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers

Recently held a business meeting in this hotel with over 300 delegates across 2 days with both in-house guests and day-only delegates. The staff were always very helpful and service was impeccable from the planning stage until the end of the meeting.

Meeting rooms were very good but seating at the back of the combined ballrooms meant the screens were a little hard to read even with back projection and 2 screens. Microphones are a must. Set-up and pull down for every stage was seamless and on time.

Food was buffet style for all function meals given the large number of attendees but the chef went out of his way to ensure high quality meals every time. They even created ice-sculptures with the company logo as a nice touch.

Well done to all at the hotel - yoiu are doing a great job.

We have now stayed at this hotel 3 times and would definitely stay again. The River location is a great escape from the city and the free boat to the SkyTrain is a lovely way to start and end a busy day. The staff are so helpful and friendly - the concierge even got us a taxi driver who knew how to get to the Harley Davidson dealer which is way off the tourist routes.
