“Good, if small, hotel”

Happy Inn

4 of 5 stars
Changzhou, China
Feb 12, 2008

It's right downtown in District 1 (Saigon), has many places around it to eat and drink. Most of Saigon's sights can easily be reached from there on foot. The hotel itself is clean and everything seems to work, but don't expect fabulous views, especially if you have a room facing the back.

They didn't offer breakfast with the package, but that can be had at any of a number of places nearby for not too much. Dinner at the nearby Indian restaurant was good, too.

What a terrible experience! I have a house in Ba Tri, in the Mekong Della and go to Saigon every week. I read the reviews and thought would try this hotel out.
First the prices are a sham rooms now are going from $35 U.S. to $50 US.

The hotel staff is discourteous and rude! My wife has two nieces who visited us one of the girls at the desk told them not to use the elevator but to use stairs instead plus some other rude remarks.
The next day found out about it and was going to let them know how rude they were but before got a word out they told us they had rented are room out. After much aruging they said they made a mistake but we decided not to stay there as there is no safe in the room and would not trust the staff.
I asked for a queen size bed and had to pay fifty dollors found out they put two beds together.

Shower is nice; room is very small, found a dead cockroach in the sink!
Will never stay there again there are much better places where you can stay and where the hotel staff will treat you as friends.

This is without a doubt the best value hotel I've ever stayed at! There are 2 branches and I stayed at the new one (Number 178) in a single room for $15 with breakfast.
My room was on the 6th floor, with a LIFT (elevator)!!! The bathroom was spotless with a proper shower cubicle. The room was small but well furnished with a fridge and cable TV and also spotless, with a very confortable bed.
The hotel doesn't have a restaurant but you get a voucher for breakfast at the restaurant next door. That was one of my favourite bits as all of the restaurant's proceeds go towars helping the local community (it's called SOJO, look it up) and it's delicious.
The hotel is situated right in the middle of the backpacker area and so is very handy for ongoing travels and so on.
All in all, I had a fantastic stay.

I stayed at this new hotel (40/13 Bui Vien Street, District 1) for 4 nights in Nov 2007 split by a trip to the Mekong Delta. I corresponded with them by email a few weeks beforehand. They were quick to let me know that my original request for a room with a balcony on a lower floor couldn‘t be fulfilled because they‘d accepted another longer booking by the time I got back to them. So I asked for ,and got, the same room one floor up. I took them up on the offer of a taxi from the airport for $10 and it was there to meet me.

The room was large with both a window that opened and a door to the balcony. Tiled floors, comfy beds, TV, fridge, a/c. Tiled bathroom with shower cubicle and screen (no bath). All nicely kept. No lift.

There’s no internet at the hotel and no free breakfast. What you are buying here is the room - tours weren’t even mentioned. Having said that the service (taxis) and the welcome were excellent. I found the location on mini-hotel alley (running between Bui Vien Street and Pham Ngu Lao St) to be perfect for me - central but quiet by Saigon standards.

Recommended. I paid $20 a night and thought it great value.

Be aware that there is another Happy Inn on Bui Vien Street proper which is listed on the business card so assume same owners - can’t tell you anything about that location.

“Excellent hotel, nice staff”

We stayed at the Happy Inn (the newer branch at 178 Bui Vien) in November 2007 and got a room with a Queen-size bed on the 6th floor for 24$. The hotel has an elevator so it was very convenient. Our room had a small balcony facing Bui Vien street so we can always observe the interesting street life from above. Bui Vien is a very lively street with activities going on till at least 2 AM.

Our room was very clean and the air-con was working perfectly. The bathroom was also clean and towels were provided but were not always in perfect condition. The staff was very nice and helpful, especially Mrs. Oanh at the front desk. No problems with bookings at all, the dates we booked for were always honoured.

There was no Internet access and no breakfast was provided but there were plenty of Internet cafes and eating places nearby.
