“An Oasis after two days of travel”

Fairmont The Norfolk

5 of 5 stars
Martinsville, Virginia
Aug 20, 2008

After travelling for two days from our home in Virginia USA, the Fairmont Norfolk Hotel was an oasis for our first two nights in Kenya on the way to a safari. The beds were comfortable, service was impeccable, the food was very good (the best butternut squash soup I've ever eaten) and the room service breakfast served at 545am on our departing morning in lieu of the standard buffet breakfast was hot/cold as appropriate and delicious. They even gave us a second wake-up call 10 minutes after the computer generated 5am call just to make sure we didn't fall back asleep.
There was still some construction going on during our 06 & 07Aug stay, but it never inconvenienced us and in fact we never heard it.
The grounds are beautiful and nicely manicured.
We relaxed on the outdoor patio with beer & wine each afternoon and evening.
Even though there isn't much to see in Nairobi (Karen Blixen house, Giraffe Center, Kazuri Bead Factory), we'll stay here again on our next safari.

“Poor service”

Fairmont The Norfolk

Aug 10, 2008

We stayed here for one night . Most aspects of the hotel were good but we had booked a pick up from the airport with them . Can you imagine our frustration on arrival to find firstly our luggage was missing and then to discover we had to organise our own taxi. THis proved to be an excellent choice. Jatco (taxi co at airport) charged 25€ for the trip while the hotel quoted 35€ per person for the same journey...rip off. We cancelled our last night booking wiht them.

“A little bit af the real africa”

Not the Norfolk we knew of old (1960s, now much expanded) but still the most nostalgic hotel in Nairobi. If you want a slice of Africa of old, stay here. Ibis grill great food, lovely service.

“Beautiful Property”

We stayed at the Norfolk Hotel on for two nights in January before leaving on a photo safari and during the day on our return to Nairobi. The room was fine, the service excellent, the property beautiful and the food delicious. There are still renovations underway, but we were out most of the day so we didn't notice the noise.
The inner courtyard is beautiful - hard to imagine that you are in such a big city.

“Not a good experience”

Fairmont The Norfolk

Our family stayed there twice - both times for one night. The hotel is going through a renovation which may account for what we encountered. (One of the dining rooms isn't operating.) The first time was fine - we were upgraded and our stay was very brief (less than 8 hours). The second stay was longer and was very unhappy. We were given two rooms which were not habitable. The rooms were dingy and dirty. There were dirty glasses and plates all over the area outside of the rooms. The AC didn't work and it must have been a permanent situation because they had large standup fans in each room. When we complained we were told the rooms were warm because they were above the kitchen. Obviously, this is not an acceptable explanation. We were moved to two rooms - one of which was fine, one of which was not. The 'not fine' room was small and dark, but we decided to accept it. Dinner was expensive and mediocre with all of our food cold or lukewarm. We sent most of it back to be re-heated. After going to sleep, our phone rang. The voice said, "We are having problems with our system. Could you tell us what your names are?" This sounded like a trick to me, so I hung up and called back the front desk. They confirmed that this was them calling and they were having problems. We gave them our names and thought that was that. Ten minutes later, there was a knock on our door. It was a bellman delivering a back - which wasn't ours. After we told him this, it was obviously difficult to go back to sleep. We complained to the manager and he told us he would be get back to us. There have been obvious problems in the country since that time, so it's not surprising that we haven't heard back yet.

All in all, we were very unhappy with our stay.
