My husband and I really loved this hotel. We stayed in a deluxe harbour view room on the 10th floor. We are SO glad we had a view of the harbour, it was a breathtaking view that we never tired of even after 5 nights. In fact, we made a point of being in our room every evening at 8 for the harbour light show. Bring a small radio and tune it to 103.4 or 103.5-I can't remember exactly-and you can listen to the music and building introductions that go along with the show. It sounds cheesy but it was fun to have your own private viewing every evening with a cocktail (we packed some travel sized liquor in our checked baggage specifically for that reason). I think the "deluxe" harbour view means that it was bigger than some of the rooms mentioned here. We did not think the room was too small at all, especially in a place where space is such a premium.
The service here really stood out as excellent. Every single person we encountered was helpful and friendly. I ordered cake and wine to be sent up for my husband's birthday and the hotel included a lovely note wishing him a happy birthday and also a complimentary piece of cake in addition to the delicious cake I ordered. I asked for it to be delivered at 7:30 and it was there precisely at 7:30 (to the minute). When my husband called the next morning to have the cart removed from our room, they asked, unprompted, if he had a nice birthday. When he hung up, we rolled the cart in the hallway. Five minutes later room service was there ready to remove the cart only it had already been taken down by another employee who happened by. We never waited at the concierge desk while someone else was being helped because each and every time we stood by waiting less than a minute later someone would come out from behind the front desk to help us. Really excellent service.
The only down side was the restaurant The Wine and Oyster Bar. It has a great view of the harbour, it's adjacent to the bar on the top of the building where you can have a drink and watch the light show. The food was expensive and really poor. It was a big disappointment and we really didn't go into it with a whole lot of expectations considering it was a spur of the moment decision to eat there in the first place. I had the seared yellowtail (approx. 5 oz) which had no flavor and was artfully placed on a bed of INSTANT mashed potatoes. You can seriously get better mashed potatoes at a cafeteria. My husband got the surf and turf, it came with a filet (5 oz) and a prawn that absolutely reeked. I could smell it from where I was sitting. We had 2 beers each and split a ceasar salad for starters, no dessert as we just wanted to leave at that point in the meal. The bill came to around $250. We have absolutely no problem paying for a good meal, but this was exceptionally pitiful considering they disguise it as a high-end seafood restaurant.
I considered taking a point away from my rating of this hotel based on this one restaurant but decided against it because of the excellent service, the location of this hotel, and the cleanliness more than makes up for one dining experience.
We also had high tea at the Intercontinental right in front of the Sheraton. It is a gorgous hotel and tea is in the lobby with a tremendous view of the harbour. I highly recommend this activity. It is approx $50 pp and you have your choice of British or Chinese high tea. We opted for the British and everything was delicious. It was a welcomed break from shopping and sightseeing.
We found taxis to be quite reasonable so we used them alot even though the hotel is very close to the MTR. It's also right on Nathan Road which is a fun shopping experience with endless stores. Get ready to hear "Copy watch", "Copy handbag" & "Tailored suit for you" about a hundred times as you make your way down the sidewalk. My husband actually did get a tailor made suit and 6 shirts done in less than 2 days. We had no idea how to pick a tailor so I decided that the guy wearing the nicest suit would get our business. In fact, there was exactly ONE guy wearing a suit that we saw so we went with him. We were very happy with the price and the results.
As for the shopping, I thought the best places for cheap trinkets were the night markets and the Western District on Hong Kong Island. You've also got to go to the Peak. The line for the tram was long- I'd say 90 minutes-but it was a Saturday. If I had it to do over again, I'd just skip the line and take a cab up there. The tram was no big deal, but the peak was worthwhile. We went in the late afternoon and watched as the buildings lit up and the sky turned dark. Brilliant.
