My wife and I stayed at the Mandarin Oriental for 6 days in late august following a 7 day stay at The Regent. We had booked a club room using the Mandarin Oriental promotion with American Express (stay 3 days and pay only for 2).
We were quite pleased with the hotel until our 3rd day. Staying in a club room we had been to the club lounge each day for breakfast and although there was a sign at the entrance mentioning the dresscode (no shorts and no open-toed sandals) this was widely ignored by the guests and on the 3rd day my wife walked in in flip-flops and was stopped at the entrance being advised she could not enter in those flip-flops. Pointing our that from the entrance she could see 2 other ladies in similar flip-flops, she was advised that the other ladies were wearing flip-flops not made from rubber....
My wife went to the room to change and the following day the club lounge manager stopped me in my tracks asking if my wife was upset over the incidence? Why the club lounge manager did not ask my wife I don't know, but I said that my wife was of course upset at having been discriminated at. Then it all fell apart for the club lounge manager... She said that they had approached the other ladies in the club lounge after turning my wife away and asked them to change shoes as my wife had pointed out they were not following the dress code. Some lame excuses followed and the manager asked me if things were now in order since they had ensured no one showed up in flip-flops. I was flabbergasted!!! I tried to explain the manager that we had nothing against the other guests wearing flip-flops but we had something against the hotel choosing to apply its policies at the entrance to some people and not to others. As we stood in the entrance to the club lounge talking about this, 2 ladies by the way walked in in flip-flops and were not stopped. The club lounge manager had no clue what I was referring to - and that is the exact reason I will never stay at a mandarin oriental hotel again.
