We stayed in the Pan Pacific on our way back from Bali for two nights and how we wish it had been longer as there was so much more to see in Singapore.
The hotel is situated on Raffles Boulevard and is connected to three shopping centres so ideal if shopping is your thing.
The hotel is amazing. The reception staff are so polite and professional and you are greeted as soon as you step out of your taxi. Your bags are whizzed away and check in is completed in no time. We asked for a smoking room but had to pay an extra $30 dollars a night but it was worth it because we got a balcony with the room on the 11th floor which overlooked the tennis courts and the harbour area.
The lifts in the hotel are fantastic. One set travels from the ground floor, near the bar, up to the 22nd floor and are made of glass with fancy lighting that changes colour and travel up the inside of the building. We spent a few hours in the bar just watching the lifts go up and down. Then there is another set that are also glass and travel up the outside of the building to the 37th floor and the views from these are a sight to behold.
The rooms are really big and the maid service is excellent with them calling twice a day to replenish tea, coffee etc. and to tidy the room.
Room service food is also reasonable in the hotel.
The hotel has an outdoor pool that has piped music underwater and is really refreshing when you have been walking around the city all day. There is also a state of the art gym and spa.
Drinks in the hotel bar are expensive. We had two beers and two cocktails and it came to £36.
Little India and Chinatown are worth visiting. The contrast with the skyscrapers is great. The MRT is really easy to use and we paid $15 for a card to use for the two days and you got $5 for returning the card and whatever money was left on it returned as it is only about 60p to travel anywhere.
Singapore is absolutely spotless and people are fined $1000 for dropping litter or cigarette butts.
A Singapore Sling in Raffles is a must. It is about £10 a drink but the atmosphere in Raffles must be sampled and the souvenir shop is great for picking up things for the family. There is no problem with walking around the hotel looking like typical tourists, they are used to it.
The nightime boat tour on the river is really nice and costs about $13 each for a 30 minute trip.
I would recommend eating at Clarke Quay and this is also the place to go for bars and nightclubs. There is a bar called the Clinic which is set up like a hospital. The chairs are gold sprayed wheelchairs and booths are small hospital beds, side by side, with ward curtains. You can get a cocktail served in a 'drip bag' that you suck on a tube or a shot as a syringe (without the needle) a great gimmicky place.
We did the compulsory trip to Orchard Road for the designer shops. I did go in a few to price certain items and I found it more expensive than the UK. I held out for the airport but they were the same prices as Orchard Road.
You will also find food markets in some of the shopping centres with stalls selling local food. We tried this for lunch the one day and the food was ridiculously cheap and delicious.
Singapore is a wonderful place and the Pan Pacific is a real treat. We couldn't fault it apart from the expensive drinks.
