“Disapponting. Lots of better choices”

Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor

I stayed for three nights and it was a lot of hassles. First I booked a a certain room catergory in the original building and was sent to the "new" wing. The room I was put in was moldly and dank. I put up a big fight and said I would be checking out the next day. I learned that a member of Raffels upper management was there and tracked him down. Suddenly another room opened up on an upper floor.

The hotel building itself is quite nice. Great pool and tea room. The hotel is across from an interesting little park and it is easy to grab a tuck tuck for a tour of the city.

Overall. I was disappointed.

“Expensive, but well worth It”

Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor

I have stayed here twice, the first time in March 2004, where I stayed in the newer part, overlooking the pool.

The second time was a surprise for my wife. I arranged for the hotel to have a large bouquet of flowers & champagne put in the room for our arrival. As we opened the door there were the largest bouquet of flowers beautifully arranged & champagne on ice, and a nice card welcoming her. A nice start to a 3 day break
This time I managed to stay in the older section.
I much prefer the older section.

The pool area is great for relaxing, lots of loungers & comfortable to relax on after a long day walking around the temples.
The breakfast is buffet style & probably one of the better breakfasts I have had in a hotel.
The staff are very friendly, calling you by name.

It is not a cheap hotel, but offers a service that is the best in the area & well worth the money.
I toured the temples of Angkor Wat, but this was arranged with an outside travel agent so cant comment on their own guides or airport transfer, but looking at other comments, seems they were value for money also.

When sight seeing on of the trips is to walk up a hill & watch the sun set, a better idea is to go to the hot air balloon & wait until the last trip of the day. It gives you a great view of the surrounding area.

“Good and bad”

Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor

First the good- excellent breakfast buffet, nice room with a definite sense of history, great swimmimg pool, good but expensive food, nice but expensive wine listgreat staff and inexpensive cocktails in the Elephant bar
The bad- we were solo travellers and there was a large tour group in. We were made to feel unwelcome at times, told we could not have a table in the coffee lounge as it would be needed for afternoon tea 90 minutes later for the group, told not to bother ordering a snack from the menu as it would "take too long" ,dance show private for the tour group. I had booked Raffles as I wanted to see the dance show, tried to catch the last 5 minutes of the dancing at the door of the show and were moved on. Most of the staf were great but one of the congierges had a poor attitude. We had booked our own tour guide. He seemed upset that we did not want him to arrange a tour and demanded to know the name and phone number of our guide. Perhaps he was trying to protect us.
As others have observed this hotels is a disappointment if you are expecting anthing like the Singapore Raffles- would not return

“A relic of the Indochine past”

Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor

My wife and I stayed here for the second leg of my honeymoon. The hotel is a colonial era hotel, but I did expect a more luxurious hotel as it was rated as one of the top properties in the world. I had my room upgraded to the pool room before I arrived. However I feel the room and bathroom were average at best. The Raffles need to invest some money and upgrade the rooms immedialty!

The hotel does transport you the the colonial past, especially chilling out with drinks in the lobby bar where they have live piano daily.

The Old Market is close by and only a $1 rickshaw ride.

The breakfast buffet was pretty good, but not nothing spectacular.

When my wife and I toured Angkor Wat, the hotel provided tour guide was excellent and the car was very clean.

I would recommend using the airport car service, which was not expensive and they pick you up in a BMW 730.

All in all it was a good experience, but overpriced for what you are paying. However I would have booked the Aman property, as it is more modern and same price point.

“Great service, romantic, colonial ambience, great pool & food”

Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor

I am a demanding customer. This was the best hotel we have ever stayed in, anywhere. We stayed at the Peninsula in Bangkok after Raffles Grand D'Angkor & Raffles had better service, a substantially better breakfast buffet, better mattress, softer linens & better toiletries. This is a GREAT HOTEL.

We stayed in a poolside cabana w/ a view of the beautiful (largest in Asia) pool which had incredible poolside service (towel boys, big padded chaises w/ fitted terry covers & shaded cabanas); good drinks, sliced lime on trays (for our gin/tonics my husband made in our room), fresh fruit (gratis) & gorgeous plumeria trees... very relaxing, quiet... not for kids.

Our room had a GIANT bath tub & a walk-in marble shower w/ a rainfall/massage head, endless hot water, great water pressure, giant towels... the toiletries include a body lotion w/ almond oil & cedar scent that seems to repel mosquitoes, as we never got bit in REP & I stopped wearing DEET after our first day.

Allow time to feast at the best breakfast buffet; 11 different fresh squeezed juices, French pastries (pain du chocolat), cheeses from France, fruit from all over the world, made to order udon or Asian noodle soup, Khmer/Thai & Chinese entrees, poached fresh salmon, western breakfast, pots of tea & coffee, attentive service (your cup & water glass is never empty), napkins are folded the minute you leave the table to restock. A lovely pistachio & white room w/ a view of the pool or you can sit outside over looking the pool.

Every time you return a staff member greets you w/ a silver tray with COLD jasmine scented towels, many times Khmer women in costume play traditional music in the lobby which has beautiful orchids, roses, lily. Outside the restaurant is a French bakery w/ amazing desserts for sale. There's also an upscale Khmer/French restaurant.

Service is personal, staff speak to you by name. Amazing fresh fruit (incredible tropical fruit) is restocked daily, room is serviced many times a day. Poolside cabana rooms have a couch, desk, excellent TV to view one's digital photos on (the Pen BKK's TV was not as good for viewing digital photos). As soon as we arrived, room service asked if we preferred foam or feather pillows (the Pen in BKK did not do this)... no matter what the request, it was taken care of, immediately.

Returning to the Grand d'Angkor every evening felt like returning home. Great location, close to temples, but a quiet oasis from the crowds.
