I had never gone zip lining before and wasn't sure what to expect.
We were picked up in a van, with other tourists, and taken about 30 minutes away to the Sky Tram/Trek area. The whole event took about 3 hours including travel to and from the hotel.
In the beautiful welcome area, you meet your three guides and get your equipment ready. There is also a gift shop and small grill to buy hot dogs or burgers.
You are taken to the top platform by gondola. On the way up, you have a nice view of the Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal. The guides will tell you a little about the canopy as you go up (about 15 minutes to the top).
At the top, more scenic views. Then the zip lining begins. You get to do two short lines to make sure you are comfortable with how things work. If not, you can hike back down or take the gondola. Don't do that.
The "real" cables go back and forth across a small valley and take you back to the welcome area. I think there were about 8 or 9 cables. The views while doing this are incredible. You are really quite high above the canopy as you zip across. You also get going very fast. The longest cable is about 750m, and you do it in about 45s.
If you are extremely scared of heights you might have trouble with this activity. Sometimes you don't quite make it to the next platform, so you have to pull yourself the last few meters. You wouldn't want to panic when that happens.
Most ages would enjoy zip lining. There was a 12 year old boy with us, and he actually went across each time with a guide holding on to him.
The whole experience seemed safe. There is only one cable you are secured to, and I was told by another tourist that there should always be a back up when you zip line, but I didn't worry about it but if you have concerns you could look into it.
The speeds you get up to are probably in the 70-80 km/h range (about 45 mph), which is quite a rush but a little dangerous if you were to touch the cable with anything while at those speeds. You have a helmet and gloves, but if you have balance issues like a middle ear disorder then I would also not recommend this activity.
In summary, this was a very fun activity and everyone in our group had a great time. The guides have a lot of fun while working and will even take pictures of you as you are landing on the next platform. Another guide held our camera and videotaped his descent across a cable.
This was the only canopy tour we did while in Costa Rica.
Very good times.

Talk about a jolt of adrenaline!

We were concerned before we booked that we would simply doing a typical "touristy thing", which we abhor, but after reading a few reviews and chatting with friends, we went decided to give it a whirl. Talk about a great decision!

We are a couple in our mid-40's and keep ourselves in pretty good shape, but for this you really don't need to be in great shape. You'll get a couple of chances to try it out on "practice runs" before the real one, where you can back out and ride the trek back down the mountain instead of zip lining if you decide not to do it at the last minute. A person in the group ahead of us picked this option, but our entire group went, older folks, soccer mom's/dad's and some pre-teens. All with no regrets!

Unlike other ziplining, you don't find yourself balancing on a homemade platform built 100's of feet in the air around an old tree trunk and having to stop yourself by grabbing the cable at the end of the run. This place has large platforms built on large steel poles with railing, and they have a guide to stop you with a rope, so you can simply enjoy the ride with no worries.

On the first "real" zipline run, I found myself thinking shortly after takeoff "Not too bad" as I went over some of the tree tops, but just as that thought was formulated, and although I continued on a straight line on the zipline, having the bottom drop out underneath you go racing over a cliff certainly had me grasping the handles just a bit tighter and removed any thoughts of this being a boring touristy attraction for the duration of the trip. Wow.

'Charlie' was one of our tour guides, and took several pics of us on the lines, as well as some videos. We'll watch them and smile for a long time to come. If you want to see the video it's

Also, as you travel to SkyTrek, you'll pass over a small bridge where you'll have a fantastic view of the side of the volcano where you can see the lava flow at night. It's not marked, so you'll have to look for it. All in all, it was just another of the many highlights of our recent visit to Costa Rica. Pura Vida!

“Best Volcano and Lake Views”

My husband and I went on the Sky Tram and Sky Trek zip line tour last week on our honeymoon. This company offers the best views of the volcano and the lake. During the tour, we heard the volcano rumbling and saw ash come out of it from the zip lines.

The van picked us up from our hotel (Arenal Nayara) right on time and we were at the tour within 30 minutes (very short distance from hotel but roads aren't so good). The driver even stopped the van and let us get out on the road to take pictures of Howler Monkeys in the trees.

All of their equipment seemed to be very secure and new. The guides spoke great English and always ensured that we remained safe while on the platforms. We heard stories from other tourists about their zip line experience with other companies and people on their tours split their heads open and were burned by the cables on their tours. We never felt like any of that could have happened with Sky Trek. Also, other companies claimed that they had the longest zip lines in the area at 950 feet but Sky Trek's longest line is over 2400 feet (lasting 40-45 seconds).

The best part about this tour is you don't have to worry about stopping yourself on the lines. They do all the work so you just get to enjoy the views. Be sure to take your camera and video cameras. The guides will take your video cameras for you and get awesome footage of the lake, canopy, and volcano when they are zipping along the lines.

I would highly recommend this company for the best zip line experience in Costa Rica. It was worth every penny!

My fiance and I are both scared of heights. So needless to say, as we were going up the Sky Tram to get to the first zip line we were both sweating & extremely nervous. But let me tell you as you are soaring over the trees & have magnificent views of the lake and rainforest, it just takes your breath away. This was the best activity we did in Fortuna. By the way, if your camera takes videos, don't forget to ask the tour guide to take a video while zipping across the cable. One of the guides did a video on my camera & it is something I will always treasure. With regards to the equipment - it is very safe & comfortable, you don't have to stop yourself, and the platforms are very sturdy. You won't regret booking this tour!

I will just start out by saying that I am the kind of guy who gets faint looking over the side of a second story building so this was a big leap so to speak for me. The trip up was great, the guide kept us busy pointing out all the flora and fauna as we passed by. We get to the top; it looks like an easy go of it. A couple of short zip lines only feet off the ground. I say great and we move on to the next line.
The friend I am traveling with goes first, as he does, I turn to the other couple going down with us and say: "I hope no one gets stuck halfway across and has to pull themselves across to the next platform as the guide had told us how to do it if we did... I would loose it and have to trek down the side of the mountain." well just as I was being hooked onto the zip line, wouldn't you know it, my friend stopped short of the next platform. I had to hang there on the line as the guides yelled to him to pull himself hand over hand to the next platform. Not wanting to look like the biggest puss, that and my guide pushed me off the platform and said "keep your legs up" I swooshed off out over this huge ravine, using every ounce of strength I had to hold onto the handle bars you have to hold onto and kicking my heels up so high I could have been a can-can girl!;-) I came barreling into the next platform at rocket speed with the guide yelling in broken English to slow down ( by this he meant to swing the handles I had griped so tight in my hands from side to side to slow my approach) At that moment I felt better about being pulled down from the next tree on the other side of the platform than having to risk stopping and having to pull myself across. Needless to say the guide just loved me on all the rest of the platforms but I got across. Once or twice finding myself close to over shooting the end of the platform but feeling a sense of arrival so to speak, as my feet skidded along the metal platform. I have to say I was sore for two days from using muscles I have never used before but I did love it and am so glad I did it. I couldn't say I'd do it again but it was so worth it. It's almost like jumping out of a plane. You feel so alive as you do it if only because you don't know if those are going to be the only moments you have left... although, in that example you don't have to do it over 6 or 7 times to get back to the ground! All said, do it you will be glad you checked it off your "bucket list" when you do. I have to disagree with some of the other reviewers, this is not for those over 50 or the faint of heart unless you are one of those wild crazy grannies who gets into that sort of thing!
