I had never gone zip lining before and wasn't sure what to expect.
We were picked up in a van, with other tourists, and taken about 30 minutes away to the Sky Tram/Trek area. The whole event took about 3 hours including travel to and from the hotel.
In the beautiful welcome area, you meet your three guides and get your equipment ready. There is also a gift shop and small grill to buy hot dogs or burgers.
You are taken to the top platform by gondola. On the way up, you have a nice view of the Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal. The guides will tell you a little about the canopy as you go up (about 15 minutes to the top).
At the top, more scenic views. Then the zip lining begins. You get to do two short lines to make sure you are comfortable with how things work. If not, you can hike back down or take the gondola. Don't do that.
The "real" cables go back and forth across a small valley and take you back to the welcome area. I think there were about 8 or 9 cables. The views while doing this are incredible. You are really quite high above the canopy as you zip across. You also get going very fast. The longest cable is about 750m, and you do it in about 45s.
If you are extremely scared of heights you might have trouble with this activity. Sometimes you don't quite make it to the next platform, so you have to pull yourself the last few meters. You wouldn't want to panic when that happens.
Most ages would enjoy zip lining. There was a 12 year old boy with us, and he actually went across each time with a guide holding on to him.
The whole experience seemed safe. There is only one cable you are secured to, and I was told by another tourist that there should always be a back up when you zip line, but I didn't worry about it but if you have concerns you could look into it.
The speeds you get up to are probably in the 70-80 km/h range (about 45 mph), which is quite a rush but a little dangerous if you were to touch the cable with anything while at those speeds. You have a helmet and gloves, but if you have balance issues like a middle ear disorder then I would also not recommend this activity.
In summary, this was a very fun activity and everyone in our group had a great time. The guides have a lot of fun while working and will even take pictures of you as you are landing on the next platform. Another guide held our camera and videotaped his descent across a cable.
This was the only canopy tour we did while in Costa Rica.
Very good times.
