“Home Away from Home”

Royal Lahaina Resort

Jun 4, 2008

Home Away From Home

We loved the Royal Lahaina. After a long flight from the east coast and a dark, 45 minute drive from the airport we arrived at the hotel around 10pm jet-lagged. We were greeted and offered the ocean view room we booked but I mentioned that we were honeymooners and promised an upgrade. Thankfully, we were given a deluxe ocean view and what a view it was – fantastic! We heard waves all day and through the night.

The room is beautifully decorated and well appointed. Loved the comfortable bed! The fridge came in handy for water and snacks. We got the special with the safe and valet parking, which was very convenient. The valet guys are friendly and helpful. In fact, all of the staff was very pleasant. And we received a complimentary bottle of champagne for our honeymoon.

We enjoyed the hotel grounds, including all of the beautiful vegetation. And the elevators were fine (yes, they are old but very fast). The RL felt distinct from the other hotels we visited, some of which were very elaborate and reminded me of Disney World. We actually preferred the lobby’s more natural Hawaiian ambiance.

We took advantage of the trolley to Whalers Village daily and only ate at the hotel once (mistake – terribly slow service and too many preying birds and gnats to enjoy). There are so many other delicious choices in Maui. Aside from the dining, however, everything else we loved including the walks along the uncrowded beachfront. The luau was also great fun and as hotel guests, we received a discount.

We cannot wait to return the Royal Lahaina and we hope that it will retain its charming, quiet and relaxing atmosphere.

“Great deal on the beach”

Royal Lahaina Resort

May 27, 2008

This was a great deal. And we were really happy with our choice! The pros: hotel is on the beach, and a little north of the tourist center of Lahaina. We had to drive to Lahaina (which is a good thing). The rooms (in the main building -- not the cottages) were renovated in the past year or so, and the hotel is totally non-smoking. The room renovations were decent, with a modern feel, and the rooms were fresh and new. Most, if not all room shave a balcony, but be careful which side of the hotel you are on, since one view (the north view) is the top of the a restaurant and luau venue (which can be loud), plus we could hear the ac units. And the cranes in the distance at the Ritz (which was under renovation, totally obstructing the view). We changed our room for a better view which was partial ocean and partial hills which was perfect. The hotel staff was very friendly. We also had a fridge. The cons: Not many, but the bathroom was small with only a shower, and the beds were not very good -- mushy and nonsupporting. Also, I wouldn't bother with any of the food options, except for maybe a drink at sunset. The food is overpriced and not great. Unlike the rooms, the rest of the hotel is really NOT renovated and rather stuck in a time warp. With the exception of the rooms, the rest of the facility is a little on the dingy side. But really the rooms and the beach were great!

“Love the Tower Rooms”

Royal Lahaina Resort

May 27, 2008

Make sure that you stay in any of the Tower rooms!! Huge bed, so comfortable, wonderful remodel from the water fixtures, stand in shower to the flat screen Tv, cozy balcony. We just got back from a 5 night stay. The Royal Lahaina was perfect, great location for snorkeling, restaurant, stores and all sorts of activities in Lahaina. We didn’t have time to try the breakfast buffet, but we had dinner and lunch in the lounge on the bottom floor, the food was good with reasonable prices. The Ice cream shop/ coffee shop was perfect for quick breakfasts if you are on the go and Royal Lahaina has a small store on site for drinks/snacks and other things. The pool is a little small, but it’s right on the beach and it’s great for cooling off from the sun and or Sun bathing. All in all I would defiantly stay there again, don’t stay in the cottages, they are out-dated because they are privately own, the hotel does not take responsibility for the look of the cottages, the owners do that!! Stay in the Towers.

“Awesome Stay”

Royal Lahaina Resort

May 25, 2008

Just got back from 4 nights at Royal Lahina and we had a great stay. The beach was perfect for my 5 year old and we enjoyed the pools as well. We also really enjoyed the Lua held on property. We were planning a return stay the second day there. Having on onsite combination coffee house/ice cream parlor worked out for all of us.

    • Liked — The room was spacious and comfortable, awesome view of the ocean and grounds.
    • Disliked — Hawaii's anti smoking policy, have to walk outside to smoke.

“Not as advertised”

Royal Lahaina Resort

I think the greeting at reception should have given us a clue. After stating to the clerk that we had a reservation...one of the first comments was "what time will you be checking out?" We were given one of the cottage rooms which had not been updated since the early 1980's. The bathrooms were in poor condition Mold in the tiles and cabinet doors in very poor condition) and the room smelled because of the old and stained carpet. The positive about the resort was the location and the ability to walk the beach and to the shopping areas through a picturesque path that runs along the outer edge of the golf course. This was the only negative experience we had during our stay in Hawaii.

Management Response

(Management representative)

The Royal Lahaina Resort has recently completed a 35 Million Dollar renovation of all guestrooms in our Lahaina Kai Tower in 2007, bringing them to a luxury level of accommodation. Our original cottage accommodations provide a unique opportunity to experience Maui and Kaanapali Beach in garden or oceanfront low-rise accommodations which offer guests a traditional Hawaiian ambiance and setting. Cottage rooms, as well as one and two bedroom cottage family suites with kitchens, are available. All of our cottage accommodations have just received a complete soft goods refurbishment (new carpeting, paint, bedding, and linens) during the spring of 2008, and offer guests a clean and comfortable accommodation.
