Most planes flying into Egypt arrive in Cairo, which is the country’s largest air hub. American airlines only fly there through partnerships with European airlines. So if you’re coming in from the United States, plan to stop over in Frankfurt, London, or another European city. Direct flights not originating from the U.S. may be found through Egypt Air, Air France, British Airways, and KLM. Flights from the United States are expensive, as well. Round-trip from New York to Egypt can cost as much as $2,000. But package deals that include both airfare and hotel can be a more affordable option.
Flights from UK seem to vary between £275 and £1500! Some flights are now using Borg El Arab airport which is about a 1 hour taxi drive from Alex. Borg El Arab is operated from Lufthansa from Europe, and some airlines from Mid-East.
From Cairo, you can get to Alexandria on a train, a bus, or an Egypt Air flight to El Nhouza Airport, which is less than 5 miles from Alexandria. You can also fly to El Nhouza Airport directly from Frankfurt, Germany on Lufthansa, and from Heathrow airport in London, England, via Damascus, Syria, on British Airways. From Athens, Greece, you can get there on Olympic Airways.
When arriving in Egypt, be prepared for strict customs checks. Authorities don’t fool around with the import of religious materials, antiques, medicine, firearms, and electronic equipment. And while there are no restrictions on bringing in or taking out foreign currency, the limit for Egyptian pounds(LE) is 5,000. Also, make sure your paperwork is in order. Citizens of the United States, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand will need a passport and a visa, which are best obtained from an Egyptian Consulate abroad before departure.
UK and other EC citizens (and possibly others) can get their visitor visa at the airport on arrival, cost is US$15, have the right money in cash, otherwise you get the change in LE (at poor exchange rates). There seems to be no problem with prescription medications.
