Visitors to Kunming have a number of options for getting around the city and the rest of the country, which include by car, bus, train, and taxi. 

            Obtaining a rental car is possible in Kunming, but not recommended.  Before considering this option of getting around, visit this Driving in China page.  Not only do first time visitors find it extremely hectic driving in China, but also, a Chinese driver’s license is required. 

            The city of Kunming is serviced by an extensive public transportation network.  There are numerous bus routes around the immediate city of Kunming, a full list of which can be found on the city map (can be purchased at any news agent).  The fare for a one way bus ride is 1 yuan, which is to be paid to the driver upon boarding.         

            Traveling by bus from Kunming to various locations within the Yunnan Province is very easy, as the bus station in Kunming is the main hub for the area.   For more information, visit the city center bus station.

            There are four train stations located throughout the city of Kunming, and from them it is possible to travel throughout most of the country.  Certain international locations are also accessible, including Vietnam. 

            Taxis are a good way of getting around the immediate city of Kunming.   Generally, taxis will be waiting outside of major public areas such as the airport, train stations, bus stations, and large hotels, but they can also be easily flagged down all around the city.
