Carson City ’s proximity to the Sierra Nevada Mountains allows for hiking and biking with spectacular views of Lake Tahoe and the Carson and Eagle Valleys . Mountain bikers will find numerous trails within a short driving distance from Carson City . Among the most notable is The Flume Trail located off U.S. Highway 28. The Flume, which begins at Spooner Lake , balances above a ridgeline offering panoramic views of Lake Tahoe. Marked by a painted blue line and inlaid bronze medallions on the sidewalk, the Kit Carson Trail guides visitors through the historical homes district and downtown area, including the capitol grounds. Wilderness enthusiasts will find plenty of outdoor activities at nearby Spooner Lake and Washoe Lake State Park . Spooner Lake is located approximately 15 miles from Carson City on U.S. Highway 28 and is recognized as one of the most diverse eco systems in the area. A 1.75-mile dirt path encircles the lake and is marked by interpretive signs that explain the animal and plant life found at Spooner Lake . An occasional sighting of bald eagles and osprey make the area popular with birdwatchers. Spooner Lake is also Nevada ’s only catch and release fishery.

Washoe Lake State Park , just north of Carson City , was once home to the native Washoe Indian tribe. In addition to strolling along the shore of Washoe Lake , hikers can access Deadman’s Creek Trail from the day-use area. The one-mile trail leads to an overlook that offers prime views of the park’s wetlands, home to a variety of birds including pelicans, ducks, great blue herons and Sandhill cranes. Mountain bike and equestrian trails are also found at Washoe Lake State Park .

Some say that the best views of Carson City are from the air. Hang gliding and hot air balloon rides are available throughout the year, weather permitting. Many of the hot air balloon tours include a complete champagne brunch after the flight.

The active person can find activities for all seasons in Carson City . Mild spring temperatures offer the option of skiing one of Lake Tahoe ’s premier ski resorts in the morning and hitting the golf course in the afternoon. Lake Tahoe boasts 15 alpine and nine cross-country resorts.
