Not far from Buttermilk Falls is another gorge worth taking a walk through. It is called Sweedler Preserve at Lick Brook and is called the "Lost Gorge". As soon as you park the car you'll hear the waterfalls and bird calls. This gorge is much less crowded than the other state park gorges yet provides a similar experience and scenery. There are many small waterfalls and three much larger ones. One of the benefits of going to this park is that parking is free. However, because it's not a state park, the trails are more rustic. They are well maintained and free of brush but do not have the built in steps and gravel some people may be accustomed to. For those looking for a more "authentic" hiking experience but don't want to be too far off the beaten path Sweedler Preserve at Lick Brook provides the best of both worlds.
Directions: Turn onto Sandbank Rd. (the first left after the entrance to Buttermilk if you are traveling south on 13). Follow Sandbank Rd. to the Y and bear right onto Townline Rd. You will see a bridge and a pull off area just before you go over the bridge. Park in the pull off area and the trail begins right before the bridge. Follow the white paint marks on the trees. After a short walk in you'll come to a small kiosk that has maps and other information about the gorge.
