Fredericksburg is almost in the exact center of Texas, so it’s not difficult to get there by plane, car or bus.
  • Plane: The nearest airport is the Gillespie County Airport, which handles private planes only. If you’re taking a commercial plane, fly to the San Antonio International Airport or the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Both are less than a two hour drive from downtown Fredericksburg. The airports offer car rentals, and it’s often much more convenient to rent a car here rather than in Fredericksburg.
  • Car: Most travelers find that a car is necessary, because it means you won’t be confined to the downtown area and can take advantage of the interstate highways that intersect in Fredericksburg. Texans should definitely just drive: San Antonio is about an hour and a half from Fredericksburg, and you can use this driving distance table to get the distance between your departure point and San Antonio. If you are coming from outside the state or don’t own a car, you can rent one from the Gillespie County Airport.
  • Bus: There’s no bus system within Fredericksburg, but coach buses do run from major cities in Texas. The bus system is not very well known or publicized and it might be wiser, if more expensive, to rent a car because you’ll need some way to get from the bus station to your hotel. Alternatively, you can call Fredericksburg Taxi, a small cab company that services all of Fredericksburg and the surrounding area.
