The Galveston location is the third in the Schlitterbahn chain (#4 is under construction in Kansas City). It was built in the developing tourist zone on Galveston Island next door to Moody Gardens on one side and the Lone Star Flight Museum on the other.
The park made news for its unique retractable roof over a section of the park that allows itto stay open and operate the entire calendar year. It also further expanded the chain's unique concept of using their river system to move crowds around the park as opposed to the traditional walking on sidewalks at most parks. The river system even incorporates sections of rapids and waves.
The park allows entrants to bring in coolers while still prohibiting alcohol. This allows park patrons to bring their own lunch and/or dinner and avoid the standard theme park concession prices.
