How travelers go about getting around South Padre Island depends greatly on what type of traveler the individual is and what the reason is for heading to the area. Primarily, there are two types of South Padre Island travelers; family travelers who are heading to the area to enjoy the beaches and Spring Break travelers who are heading to the area to enjoy the festivities. The former usually get around by car and the latter via walking and public transportation.
Family travelers often come from nearby cities and states to enjoy the beaches of South Padre Island for a few days. Alternatively, they may arrive via the local airport. (See http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g56... for more information on arrival in the area.) In either case, these travelers generally have either their own car or a rental car. This means that it is relatively easy for them to plan on driving in the area. These travelers are reminded that the busy season is in the spring ( http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g56... ) during which time traffic may be heavy.
Spring Break travelers generally arrive in the area via plane, train or bus. It is highly recommended that these travelers not rent cars, taking major public transportation to get to the area and then getting around via local public transportation and self-transport (walking or bicycling). South Padre Island is small enough the visitors can easily walk. Additionally, Spring Break travelers often head to the Mexico side of the area and it is strongly, strongly recommended that cars not be taken to Mexico. Visitors who are driving should park on the South Padre Island side of the border and walk over.
