The Myakka River State Park is located just southeast of Bradenton. There are hiking trails, picnic areas, campsites and many scenic landmarks along the way; fishing and boating aficionados can also rent a canoe or boat to take out onto the waters. This is one of the oldest and largest parks in the state. Also try the Fort De Soto National Park near St. Petersburg, which is made up of five keys (small islands): Bonne Fortune, Mullet, Madelaine, St. Christopher, and St. Jean. There are piers, picnic areas, camping grounds, small gift shops, nature trails and a museum here. Boaters can, of course, also rent a craft and drift along the Intracoastal Waterway for a relaxing ride.
The beautiful waters just offshore of Bradenton make this city an excellent place to get in some boating adventures (or to learn how to sail, if you don't know). Fishing is a particular favorite among tourists, but remember to get a fishing license if you are going alone. If you go on a fishing charter ship, generally no license is required. Also check minimum size and bagging limits before going out, since there are some protected species that cannot be fished. Boat rentals are available from most piers, and you will find plenty of fishing cruise agencies near the docks.
