Waxwings, by Jonathan Raban. This book takes place in Seattle in the late 1990s, and tells of some of the viscissitudes of the Northwest technological invasion and venture capital start-ups. You can read reviews of Waxwings here.
Say Anything, starring John Cusack. This 1989 movie is a classic coming-of-age tale, set in Seattle.
Sleepless in Seattle, starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Everyone has seen this movie at least 4 times, but it could get you in the mood for your vacation, and help you pick out some fun places to visit. Much of the movie was filmed on location in recognizable Seattle places, like the Pike Place Market.
Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson. This book, set in the 1940s, tells the sad tale of Japanese immigrants to Seattle, as well as a poignant love story.
Ten Little Indians by Sherman Alexie. This book of short stories offers intriguing insight into the role of Native Americans in Northwest history and modern culture.
