Georiga Shakespeare is one of Atlanta's most prized theater companies. Each May, the 21-year-old theater peforms SHAKE AT THE LAKE, free Shakespeare in Piedmont Park. After three years, this week-long event has become a favorite Atlanta tradition.
When not in Piedmont Park, the company performs at its home base, the Conant Performing Arts Center. Set on the scenic campus of Oglethorpe University, the Conant is a perfect venue to see a play. Many patrons arrive early and picnic on the landscaped grounds before heading into the theater for the performance. It's a great way to enjoy dinner, drink and laughter with friends and family.
Georgia Shakespeare features some of the best actors in the Southeast. Over the years, a world-class ensemble of artists has evolved, making critics remark that Georgia Shakespeare produces "theater the world could use more of."
This year, Georgia Shakespeare performs Shakespeare's Hamlet, Twelfth Night, and Othello. The company also presents the professional regional premiere of Mary Zimmerman's Tony Award-winning play Metamorphoses. Set in and around a 24-square foot swimming pool, Metamorphoses promises to be the theatrical event of the year.
For the kids, Georgia Shakespeare offers a wide variety of education programs and theater for young audiences. This summer, the company presents Robert Lewis Stevenson's Treasure Island.
