Five favorite places to walk in Honolulu are:
1. Chinatown. Some of the best food stands in Honolulu and the price is right, sitting at long tables with the locals and not over $5 for a huge plateful of food. After lunch wind through the open markets stalls to see fresh fish in tanks, exotic fruits, veggies piled high and being haggled for. http://www.chinatownhi.com/
2. Iolani Palace. A fairy tale building rising in the center of the city. A bandstand sits beside the palace where the Royal Hawaiian Band puts on free concerts. The site is a definite respite from the buzz of the city streets. Walk to the back where you can sign up for a fascinating tour of the interior. http://www.iolanipalace.org/
3. Honolulu Academy of Arts on Kinau Street. The international collection is better than the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco. The Hawaiian section is elegantly presented. Plan to spend the better part of the afternoon there. http://www.honoluluacademy.org/
4. Hawaii Maritime Museum, Pier 7. The Story of Hawai`i -- from the volcanic birth of the Hawaiian Islands to the adventures of the Polynesian voyagers, European explorers, and whalers. Honolulu has the last four-masted, full-rigged ship left in the world. THE FALLS OF CLYDE was built in 1878 and is a national historic landmark.
5. Foster Botanical Garden located at 50 North Vineyard Boulevard. It's the oldest of the Honolulu Botanical Gardens and contains trees that were planted in the 1850s. Nice picnic stop under the giant trees. For more downtown walks with all the directions, get the Oahu Trailblazer guide. If you are visiting with your family, there is a wonderful zoo and aquarium near Waikiki. To get there, read the book. http://www.co.honolulu.hi.us/parks/hb...
