Taxis
Catching a taxi in Honolulu is not quite as easy as in a major city like New York or San Francisco, but not difficult. And if you're leaving an attraction or a restaurant and need a taxi, you can always ask someone at the establishment to call a taxi for you. A variety of taxi services, limo services, and shuttles are available. There are stands all over Waikiki with free books that include not only entertainment and dining options, but also companies for shuttle, limo and taxi information and sometimes discount coupons.
TheCab Company provides taxi services in the local communities around the Island of O'ahu and all military bases. With a GPS system, TheCab provides 24/7 services. Charley's provides taxi services 24/7 at a few major hotels and in the local community.
Rental Cars
Cars can be rented from the airport on arrival, or from several shops in Waikiki. On occasion, you can find a good package deal from the vendors near Waikiki- though often your car will not come from one of the well-known rental agencies, it can still save you some money. Generally an airport rental will cost a bit more, and really isn't a benefit while in Waikiki due to limited parking and the ability to walk to so many things.
Good sites for advance booking:
- www.discounthawaiicarrentals.com - they give the best rate/company for the day you want, and you can pick up and drop off in Waikiki.
- http://www.carrentals.com/ - searches all the major car rentals for the best rates simultaneously, i.e. Alamo, Budget, Enterprise, Thrifty, Advantage, etc.
If you need a large capacity vehicle, visit JN Rentals located outside of the Honolulu International Airport, across the street from Alamo Rent a Car. They rent 7, 8, 12 and 15 passenger vans. The number is (808) 831-2724 or visit online http://www.jnautomotive.com/MiscPage_10. (Credit goes to islekane for this info)
